NO WAS ONCE A RESPECTABLE WORD

Parents once used a word
not so terribly long ago.
It was used fairly often,
the short and very simple
no!

Parents often used it
in teaching kids wants and needs.
Wants sometimes receive a
no,
while needs receive
yes, indeeds!

Experts have told parents
a
no is a definite no-no.
Your
no must look like a yes,
to protect your child's ego.

No was once used
to alert kids to danger,
no drugs, no booze, no sex,
no candy from a stranger.

Since
no is never heard
in denying them pleasure,
teens can not use the word
in answer to peer pressure.

It makes it hard for them
as they struggle for maturity.
For
no's a common word
when facing cold reality.

Never having heard a
no,
they can't accept the word.
And pout and shout out loud
in hopes a
yes will be heard.

We find them everywhere,
in divorce courts, even jail,
Sometimes in the White House,
and in relationships that fail.

Parents need to bring back
no,
and this time let it stay.
For when used and not abused,
it's a loving word to say.
