the agony in the garden

for us, the guilty,
a man is to die tomorrow,
he has already been betrayed,
and he is soon to be arrested.
he can see it all before him,
he will be whipped,
he will be mocked and humiliated,
denied and deserted by his friends.
he will be nailed to a cross,
and his death will be brutal,
beyond any words or imagination,
yes, all of this,
an innocent man is to bear
for us, the guilty!

in the garden,
three friends he chose
to hear his anxious prayer,
and to lend him support,
they are fast asleep.
only his father hears him,
and sends him an angel for comfort.
good and faithful son that he is,
he will obey and do his father's will,
and this he will do with love,
for us, the guilty!
