My Best Kiss

I kissed you best
    while you were fast asleep,
and my kiss was so softly placed,
    you did not stir.

It was my one unselfish kiss,
not a kiss to bring me elsewhere,
nor one to go with a hello or goodbye,
and not to make or score a point with.

   I had simply stood there-
   so overwhelmed,
   so touched by the lines,
love and time had written on your face,
that I gave my kiss, and for once,
I asked for nothing in return.
