I Give Notice To My Enemy, Cancer

You came and invaded me in a sneak attack,
and colonized, building your hateful force.
      While I stayed immobilized,
you gained strength, in your fateful course.

Did you think I'd be a pushover,
that I was far too old to fight,
With my territory up for grabs,
while I slept on, both day and night?

Yes. I slept, not knowing you were there,
as only the unknowing sleep in bliss.
Awakened at last by a saving test,
I saw for myself, just how much was amiss.

The doctors made me face the sight of you,
though I tried so hard to look away.
I saw an angry red planet, edged in black,
an alien force to reckon with that day.

For weeks you held me captive,
while I readied for the battle ahead.
Wondering where would come the courage,
the strength, the power, to knock you dead.

I did find the courage within to fight you,
and a powerful surgeon and a team,
Who battled til you were, at last, removed,
while they let me sleep, lost in a dream.

Yet the battle was not complete or ended,
for heaven knows what you left behind,
So six cycles of chemo were ordered
to fight whatever aliens they might find.

Well, my enemy, I put you on notice,
my team and I will fight you like hell.
With a spirit which you can never touch,
we will zap you, each and every cell.

A brief note: I finished my 6th and final chemo
cycle March 11th. I will be going for weekly check ups for awhile. It has been a rugged six month period for me and hopefully, it was all for the good. Thanks for your kind wishes and prayer.     Roland Ricker, colon cancer survivor
