MANKATO — The Marshall boys track team finished second at an indoor meet hosted by Mankato West Tuesday. The Tiger girls, led by a third in the shot put from Alexis Miller, finished fourth at the meet, held at Minnesota State, Mankato.

West dominated the boys side, putting up 150 points. The Tigers finished with 37.

“They’re loaded with good kids at every level,” Marshall boys coach Mike Jacobs said. “They’re a well-balanced team.”

Yahya Iman won the 1,600 run for the Tigers with a time of 4:47. Tom Allen was fifth in that event with a time of 4:56.

Akey Jumale won the two-mile run with a time of 10:22, while Jon Tauer added a time of 10:27 to take third.

The Tiger boys 4 by 800 relay team, consisting of Bart Johnson, Iman, Allen and Jumale, was second at 8:45.

“We got a lot of scoring out of our juniors, and our distance kids came through pretty good,” Jacobs said. Ryan Brunsvold was third in the shot put with a throw of 39-7. Jamie Placensia, the only senior competing on the day for the Tiger boys, was third in the high jump.

Kai Sill added a third-place finish in the 200 dash for Marshall.

“We had unlimited entries in almost every event; that was pretty nice,” Jacobs said. “A lot of these young kids, it was their first crack at track this year.”

“We’re kicking around a lot of freshmen and sophomores. We’ve started to identify a lot of kids who are going to contribute down the road.”

Fairmont dominated the girls competition, scoring 141.5 points. The Tiger girls were fourth at 14 points.

“Fairmont has quite a contingent of girls. They’re strong from top to bottom,” Marshall girls coach Leo Geraets said. “We’re still testing the waters. From a numbers and from a team caliber standpoint, we’re not quite up not up there.”

Miller had a throw of 29-1 in the shot put. Laura Johnson also had a strong day with a third-place finish in the 3,200 run. She was part of a third-place team in the 4 by 800 relay, which also included Jessica Pauley, Haley Meyer and Tricia Schultz. Recording fifth-place finishes for Marshall were Heidi Meier, Elizabeth Lensing, Sarah Wyffels, and Haley Meyer.

“Some girls had improvement in their times and distances,” Geraets said. “Alexis Miller certainly had an improvement. She went up almost a foot in the shot put. Laura Johnson had a good run in the 3,200. Our distance runners are showing quite a bit so far.”
