Joe and I had been to this area a few months previous to this trip. We realized we would have to return with our boat to really explore the coast and the islands that are just off shore. On island in particular that we wanted to see is Sapelo. It is inhabited only with the ancestors of the slaves that had worked on the Thomas Spalding Plantation that was on Sapelo beginning in 1802.
The trick was to get back there before the summer bugs and heat got there. So we went home worked on the boat, and made a tent that would allow us to camp on the boat if we wanted to.
The first night we spent camping on the boat at Bubba's Marina.Bubba's had the best access to Sapelo Island. We put the boat in the water, and put the boat tent up and had a wonderful quiet night on his docks. We enjoyed talking with a sweet family that was fishing for whiting off of his docks. |
