More Than That

Chapter 5: The Stanley Cup and The Proposal (Part 2)
“Less than two minutes left in this third period. The score is still tied at three. Here’s Forsberg with the puck. Short pass to Alex Tanguay. He has it. Poked away by Petr Nedved. Now McKenna has it. Bring it into the Avalanche’s zone near side. He shoots and blocked by Patrick Roy as he holds on to it for the face-off.”

“What happens when they tie? Do they do some overtime period?” Nick asked.

Brian and Leighanne looked at him.

“Duh. Just like every other sport. They go into a sudden death period which is as long as a regular one and who ever scores next, wins.” Leighanne told him.

“But what if someone doesn’t score in that period?”

“Then they have another intermission and then another period. If they don’t score in that one, then they do another intermission and another period and so on and so forth until someone scores.”

“Gees...I wonder what’s the longest overtime they had gone through.”

“I think the longest was three overtime periods.”

“No way! God, I wonder how these people do it.”

“Fifty seconds left in regulation time. Someone could still score and win Lord’s Stanley Cup here tonight. Bob Hartley has his second line out again. Nieminen has the puck far side. Pass to Rob Blake. Pass to Kasparitius. Back to Blake at the point.  Over to Drury. Pass to Reinprecht he shoots...blocked by Richter! Rebound...SCORE! Chris Drury has scored to give the Avalanche the lead with fifteen second left in the game!”

“Oh my Bill! How amazing was that? Let’s take a look at that again...Here’s the pass to Kasparitius from Rob Blake. Then back to Blake at the point. Then he sees Drury over to his right. Then here’s Drury who makes a perfect pass to Steven Reinprecht who shoots it but is blocked but then Drury comes out of nowhere to score on the rebound. What a beauty!”

“Man, this team has come along way. Especially after last year in the Western Conference Finals against the Detroit Red Wings in Game Seven. They had played their worst game there to this date, losing to Detroit, who won the Cup that year, 7-0. This team today is a completely different team from that game! Man, we got some extremely happy fans and players here in this building. Listen to this crowd!”

The TV shot then went back to Arlet and Sarah as it showed, in slow motion of them holding each other hands with Debbie Sakic and Michele Roy in anticipation and of them celebrating and hugging each other. The four of them were on their feet, crying, clapping and celebrating the goal. Then the highlight showed Chris by the glass, blowing a kiss up to Sarah after he was congratulated from his teammates. Brian, Leighanne and Nick heard the commentators laughing in the background.

“Those two really are in love. We are all happy for both of them.”

“Ten second left in the game, the Avalanche ahead by one goal. It looks likes the Avalanche are bringing home the cup.”

The crowd in the background counted down, out loud with the clock. Every single person was on their feet, excited to be there.

Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four. Three. Two. One.
The buzzer of the arena went off to end the game. The crowd exploded even louder. The players threw their sticks, gloves and helmets off and skated on the ice to celebrate. A huge group of Avalanche players gathered in the middle and officials worked to get everything set up. Sarah, Arlet, Debbie and Michele ran down the steps to the ice.

When the guard let them through, Sarah ran to Chris and flew into his arms. They both fell onto the ice as everyone in the arena and everyone watching at home watched as the couple embraced and kissed each other passionately. Debbie ran to her husband Joe and gave him a huge kiss and Michele did the same to her husband Patrick. Arlet looked around for her best friend, Ville. When she saw him skating towards her, she smiled and ran to meet up with him half way.

“Arlet! We won! We won! Can you believe it!” Ville said picking her up and spinning her around.

“I know! I can’t believe it! I’m so excited!” Arlet said giving him another hug.

“I hope my wife is watching right now.” He said, smiling.

“I’m sure she is. She’s in the hospital with your son and your new daughter. What perfect timing, eh. She gives birth to your new daughter the day before you win the Stanley Cup! These two days have been some exciting ones for you.”

“Well, not as exciting as it will be for Sarah.” He replied with a hint of secrecy in his voice.

Arlet lifted an eyebrow. “What do you mean?” He just shrugged.

Ville then gave her another quick hug before he skated in line to shake hands with the other team. Arlet and Sarah, stood next to each other, beaming and waiting for them to finish the hand shakes. Afterwards, Chris skated over and grabbed Sarah again. He took her over to the end of the red carpet that was rolled out to present the Stanley Cup. Ville skated next to Arlet with a look of excitement on his face. They then turned their attention back to Chris and Sarah and saw that Chris had a microphone in his hand.

“Excuse me Ladies and Gentlemen. Before we get to the rest of the ceremony, I would like to make an announcement.” Chris’s voice rang over the arena’s sound system.

Arlet looked over at Sarah and gave her a questioning look. Sarah just shrugged in response with a look of pure confusion on her face.

“First, tonight has been one of the best nights I have ever had. Ever in my entire life. Hopefully it’ll get better. Winning the Stanley Cup for the second time has definitely made me extremely happy. Knowing that my name is going to be engraved a second time is just an indescribable feeling I have. I can’t tell you how happy I am.

“And secondly, you all probably know who this beautiful woman is standing next to me. For all of you who don’t know, she is my girlfriend...at the moment.”

Sarah’s face went from confusion to horrified. She turned to look at Arlet who had her mouth hanging open in shock. Ville just smiled.

“Her name is Sarah Elizabeth Wells. I love her so much. She means so much to me that I wouldn’t know what to do without her. She’s been by my side ever since we met almost two years ago. She has supported me at every game, win or lose. She’s been there for me, home or away and she’s my life. She is what I’ve been missing in my life for years and she completes me like nothing else.” Chris turned to face his girlfriend and smiled. “I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want you to be the mother of my children and I want to wake up everyday with you by my side.” He stopped, pulled away and faced the other end of the red carpet.

A huge figure started to walk out onto the carpet. It was Howler, the mascot. The crowd greeted him with claps and cheers. He was carrying a square Avalanche pillow and on top of the pillow was a container for a hockey puck. The crowd was again, on their feet, waiting to see what’s going to happen next. Arlet stood in complete shock and couldn’t help but squeal at Ville who was still smiling but bigger.

“Thanks Howler.” Chris said to the huge, furry abominable snowman who was decked out in Avalanche gear. He gave a salute and walked over to the side. “Everyone here tonight and everyone watching this on their television sets all over to the country know you as Sarah Elizabeth Wells. But I hope they will know you as Sarah Elizabeth Drury.” He got down on one knee. Everyone was quiet from the shock and anticipation. “Will you marry me?” No one said anything.

“Oh my God!” Arlet shouted in shock. Everyone laughed. Chris looked over and chuckled. He then brought his eyes back to his girlfriend and then took off the top of the container to reveal a gorgeous engagement ring.

Sarah’s eyes were welted up in tears. She didn’t know what to say. “Oh my God.” she managed to say. “Oh my God. Yes! I will marry you!”

The crowd exploded again as the newly engaged couple embraced. They said their ‘I love yous’ to each other as Arlet and Ville looked at each other, smiling. The both of them looked behind them and saw the rest of the team smiling as well, completely happy for their teammate.

After the rest of the ceremonies finished, all the players and coaches had many parties, celebrating their glorious victory that night. It was five o’clock in the morning before Arlet decided to head home. She said goodnight to Chris and Sarah before she went home to sleep. As soon as she got home, she checked her messages.

“Oh. I got a message. I wonder who called.” She said to herself out loud as she pushed the button and heard Nick’s voice fill the room. She smiled.

*Beep* “Hey Babydoll. It’s me, Nick. I watched the game today. Hey, that’s cool. Tell congrats to Chris and Ville for me. Also to Sarah and Chris on their engagement. Anyways, I knew you wouldn’t be home but I wanted to call anyways. I just wanted to call about you comin’ down here to visit me. You still plannin’ on comin’ down or what? Anyways, when you can , give me a call. I hope you can come down. I really want to see you. I miss seeing my best gal pal. Anyways, bye Babydoll! Talk to you soon!” *Beep*

Arlet chuckled. What a dork she said to herself. She ran upstairs, changed into her Avs PJ’s and got ready for bed. Before she fell asleep, she looked at her poster of all the Avalanche players in the line-up for this season and blew a kiss. She laughed at herself for her dorkiness, sighed lightly, closed her eyes and fell asleep.
