The Best Holiday Break Ever
by: Arlet Schmidt
CHAPTER ONE
Snow fell lightly all over the whole state of Colorado. It was Christmas Break for most students and vacation time for everyone else. Almost every neighborhood was quiet as families sat by their fireplaces, spending quality family time or groups of people having Christmas parties.

In one particular house, that was away from most of the homes and was perched on top of a hill looking out at downtown Denver, lived of a group of friends. After graduation from high school the year before, the 5 girls put the left over money from their college funds and decided to build a house together. All girls were going to college, 3 at Red Rocks Community College, 1 at Metro State College and 1 at Denver University in Denver.

The group of girls have been best friends since grade school. Their names were Michelle Lessans, Sarah Wells, Carrie Wallis, Kim Robinson  and Arlet Schmidt. There were all different in many ways but had one major thing in common: The Backstreet Boys. That music group was one of the things that brought them close together. Each of them had their own favorite Boy and have dreamt about meeting all of them.

Michelle Lessans was an outgoing, crazy 18-year-old. She was the shortest one out of her friend, standing at only exactly 5 feet but her big personality made up for it. She was willing to try anything and was known as the a little rebel. She had an "I-don’t-give-a-damn" attitude that caused a few eyebrows to be lifted. She had really short, orange/red looking hair that she spiked that complimented her brown eyes. Michelle definitely was also known as ‘the artist’ for she would sit down for hours sketching or playing her music.

Sarah Wells, who was also 18 was the most caring one of all of them. She could get along with anyone and made sure she treated everyone they way they deserved to be treated. She was a role model for all of them, and anyone that knew her looked up to her. She was also outgoing, but yet shy at points. Sarah had short light brown hair that stopped below her ears and curled out at the ends and had hazel eyes. She was one of the taller ones of the group of friends, standing between 5’5" and 5’6".

Carrie Wallis was the oldest one of the group as she was already 19. The others looked up to her, literally. She was the tallest with her height being 5’11". Not only did her friends look up to her physically, they looked up to her as a person. She was their older sister who looked after them and encouraged them to do their best. She was actually in her second year in college at Metro. She was fun, outrageous and had a great sense of humor. She always managed to bring out the best of anyone and made everyone laugh at anytime and was also very creative. She had her own on-line comic strip that got really popular, wrote amazing songs and always seem to talk with her hands in every conversation and added sound effects to go with them. Carrie had bleached-blond hair that stopped a couple inches above her shoulders and were in small curls and had blue eyes.

Kim Robinson was the most athletic one of the group. Also 18, Kim could kick anyone’s butt at swimming and worked out at the pool a lot. She was the most in-shape one and had a lot of energy. When she was not competing or working out, she would always be talking to someone. She was always caring and lovable. Kim loved to have a good time and could make anyone feel good about themselves. Kim had blond hair that went slightly past her shoulders and had blue/green eyes. Kim stood around 5’5" and had the leanest body.

Now, the youngest one of the group was Arlet Schmidt. Having her birthday a month after Kim’s made her the baby of the group. She had the most bubbly personality and full of energy. She always wanted to try new things and meet new people. Always a smile on her face, her friends dubbed her "the cute one". Although she hated that name, she didn’t care too much. Arlet was very outgoing and funny. Herself and others, would admit she has had her ditzy moments but then again, everyone has. After Michelle, she was the next shortest one. She was only 2 inches taller than Michelle, making her 5’2" but her big heart definitely made up for that. She had really long black hair that went down to the middle of her back and had dark brown eyes.

The 5 girls had other things in common other than their Boys. Everyone of them loved to go up to the mountains to hit some slopes almost every chance they could get. Michelle, Sarah, Carrie and Arlet were snowboarders while Kim was a skier. They thought Kim was the only cool skier on the planet. The 5 of them were extremely smart, graduating with top honors and high grades in their classes. They all wanted to go to college and get their degrees. But most of all, they all loved hanging out together. Just being a group of friends, laughing and hanging out. Most of the time, they would rather stay home and hang out and watch a movie. Most of their fond memories from their childhood would be the times when they would all hang out at one of their houses and have a good discussion and watching movies all night long.

The snow outside of the huge 3-story house began to fall a little bit harder. Even though it was only 4:15 in the afternoon, it looked like it was night outside. The wind started to pick up and made the cold air even more cold. But inside the house, everything was nice and warm.

"Hey, you sure you’ll be OK home alone?" Michelle asked.

"Yeah, I’ll be OK. I’m most likely gonna sleep. Tell Shawn I’m sorry that I couldn’t make it. I really wanted to see him." Replied Arlet.

"Don’t worry. We’ll tell him. I’m pretty sure he’ll understand." Arlet coughed. Michelle frowned. "You sure you don’t want us to stay home?  I mean, we could call him up and tell him we couldn’t make it."

"No, no, no. Go and see him. He’s been in Europe teaching and we haven’t seen him for a long time. I’ll just see him on New Years, definitely. Just don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine."

"OK then, if you say so. Do you want a warmer blanket?"

"Oh, could you get me one? Thanks." Arlet replied gratefully. She had been feeling sick for the last couple days with a really horrible cold. She was lying on the couch in the living room, waiting for her friends to leave and visit an old friend of theirs.

Michelle smiled as she got up and exited the living room. Kim, Carrie and Sarah walked in.

"Are you feeling any better?" Sarah asked, concerned.

"Just a little."

"Well, look on the bright side. Good thing we’re on Christmas break. If we weren’t, imagine the amount of school work you would have to make up." Kim told her.

Arlet groaned. "Oh, don’t mention school work. School’s out for a moment."

"Sorry."

Michelle returned, walking into the living room carrying a very warm, think blanket.

"Here you go." She said laying it on top of Arlet, trying to make her feel as comfortable as she could.

"You sure you want us to go?" Carrie asked.

"Yes, I’m sure. I’ll be fine. Don’t worry. I’m probably just gonna take some more of my medicine, make some hot water with honey and lemon then get some sleep. I’ll most likely be sleeping when you guys come home." Her friends looked at her, worried. She frowned. "I know I’m the baby of the group but don’t worry. I’ll be fine. I’m 18-years-old, I think I know how to take care of myself. You guys better get going before it gets really bad out there. Looks like the snow’s falling harder." She informed them, looking out the front window. All of them turned to look.

"She’s right. We better get going. We’ll see you later. You got our numbers and Shawn’s number if you need us. We’ll see you in a few hours. Hope you feel better." Sarah said, then leaned down and gave her a sisterly kiss on her forehead. The others did the same. The four of them exited the living room, walked across the entrance hall and into the kitchen where the door to the garage was.

Arlet heard the door open and close. Then the sound of an engine rearing up. She heard the sound of the closing garage door, offering confirmation to her that they had left. Arlet sighed as she wrapped the blanked tightly around her body and closed her eyes to dream about her baby, Nick Carter.
