November Memories

While the real mening of Armistice day will be remembered by most Australians for its true significance in our history, some people undoubtedly will focus on the political events that occurred 25 years ago on November 11.

Whichever way we think, perhaps we should spare a thought for another significant event that occurred just over 25 years ago - the invasion of East Timor by the Indonesian Army.

Recently released documents reveal that the Australian prime minister of the day had knowledge of the pending invasion and seemingly said and did nothing. I feel, therefore, it would be appropriate for a memorial to be built to the people of East Timor who suffered as a consequence. the inscription could read: "Well might we say 'God Save the Queen' because nothink will save the people of East Timor, at least as far as I'm concerned."

It would be fitting if the cost were borne by donations form some of our revered former politicians.

Colin Buchanan, Buderim, November 9.
