Receptive bilingualism is also functional bilingualism, viewed through minimalist viewpoint. As the name implies, 'receptive' bilinguals are only able to receive L2, but are unable to produce L2. Receptive bilingualism is also called 'passive', because a user cannot actively participate in and through the use of L2.
Receptive bilingualism is particularly high among those migrants, who function predominantly inside their own ethnic communities. Their L2 are developed only as far as it is necessary to exist in L2 environment. |
