Punctuation
Look at the following passage from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling and pay special attention to direct speech and punctuation.

Grunt. Harry supposed that meant yes.
'Thank you.'
He was about to go back upstairs when Uncle Vernon actually spoke.
'Funny way to get to a wizards' school, the train. Magic carpets all got punctures, have thay?'
Harry didn't say anything.
"Where is this school, anyway?'
'I don't know, 'said Harry, realizing this for the first time. He pulled the ticket Hagrid had given him out of his pocket.
'I just take the train from platform nine and three quarters at eleven o'clock,' he read.
His aunt and uncle stared.



This can also be written as reported speech:

He thanked him and was about to go back upstairs when Uncle Vernon actually spoke about the train as a funny way to go to a wizards' school. He made a remark about magic carpets with punctures. Harry didn't say anything.Then Uncle asked where is this school. Harry realized for the first time that he didn't know. He pulled out the ticket Hagrid had given him out of his pocket. He looked at it and told them that he needs to take a train from platform nine and three quarters at eleven o'clock.
His aunt and uncle stared.
