Martin Baker's Biography |
Martin D. Baker, Republican candidate for United States Congress, Missouri Fifth District, was born and raised in the southeast Missouri city of Sikeston. He also attended Sikeston Public Schools and graduated with the Sikeston High School Class of 1988. After graduation, Martin attended both Ricks College (now Brigham Young University-Idaho), in Rexburg, Idaho and the University of Missouri at Columbia (UMC). While attending those schools, he studied Political Science as his major and minored in American History and Criminal Justice. While at UMC, Martin volunteered for numerous political campaigns including the 1994 Senate campaign for John Ashcroft, and the US Congressional Campaigns for Joanne Emerson and Kenny Hulshof. On the UMC campus Martin served two terms as a Student Senator, representing his residence hall in the Associated Students of the University of Missouri (ASUM). As an ASUM senator, Baker was a strenuous advocate for the rights of the underrepresented and stood for both principle and policy. In 1996 Baker left college to become a parent and welcomed the birth of his daughter Emma, who was subsequently joined by siblings Elaina, Baijia, and Gabriel. While working in the private sector, Martin also volunteered as a consultant and recruiter for numerous campaigns on the local and national scene in the states of Utah and Missouri. In 2000, Baker served as the Davis County Utah Coordinator for the Alan Keyes Presidential Campaign and was instrumental in assisting with a second place finish for Keyes in the Utah Primaries. Subsequently, Baker went on to campaigns on the local and national levels in Nebraska and back in his home state of Missouri. Due in large part to numerous relatives within southeast Missouri, Baker still has and will continue to maintain his roots in the time honored principles and traditions of southeast Missouri. Baker is eager to bring those small town principles to the Fifth Congressional District. |
