Vegetarian Restaurants in Madrid!
These have been discovered and kindly provided by our good friend Jerry Bailey. MJ and Raquel visited some of these restaurants recently and have added their comments to Jerry's
1. Al Natural Vegetariano C/Zorilla, 11 28014 Madrid Tfno 913 694 709; www.alnatural.biz comida sana para sentir bien located east of pza. de la Puerta del Sol towards c/Paseo de la Castellana Jerry's comments: we ate here several times; very nice atmosphere, decent prices; large no smoking section; very popular. MJ's comments: nice part of town, they have tablecloths and nice decor with attention to detail. Higher prices than Artemisa (below), would be good for special occasions, not easy for parking but easy to find.
2. Artemisa Tres Cruces, 4 (Pza. Del Carmen) Tfno 91 521 87 21 also http://www.la_red.com/artemisa Comments: very nice also; very good veggie paella; good value; no smoking restaurant; esta arbierto 13;30-16:00 y 2100-0100 (?); popular Entre Pza. de la Puerta del Sol y metro Gran Via 2n location: Ventura de la Vega, 4 en frente a las c/Cortes tfno: 91 429 50 92 Jerry's comments: Did not eat there but very popular judging by the queues to enter; also no smoking MJ's comments: decor not great but clean and with tablecloths. Lacked air conditioining when we went there (July so it needed it..) GOOD portions of food, very good delicious menu, good salads. Would go there often!
3. Chez Pomme Vegetariano Pelayo, 4 28004 Madrid Tfno 915 321 646 (metro Cheuca Via; c/Pelayo is one block west(?) Comments: quasi French; very good also; set lunch menu special only; varied menu for dinner; small no smoking section; also very popular
4. Nudle Bar Located between metros Pza. Espana y Noviciado (es mas cerca Noviciado)on c/de San Bernandino between c/de los Reyes and c/San Leonardo. We do not have the address number but it is easy to find; Jerry's comments: not primarily a vegetarian restaurant but they do offer vegetarian dishes which are good; nice choice for something quick and if you want some good Asian food; they do offer comida picante. More expensive than the above restaurants but prices are still moderate (especially by London standards). There are several other ethnic restaurants on the street (e.g Persian). MJ's comments: Couldn't find it...
5. El Estragon Pza. De la Paja (en zona de los Austrias entre Pza. Mayor y metro la latina; a pie va a c/Segovia baja de c/bailan oeste de punte de Segovia) Tfno: 91 365 89 82; www.menudeldia.com Comments: beautiful setting near a square surrounded by some of the oldest churches near Pza. Mayor but very very difficult to find. No smoking restaurant with a menu heavy on dairy (cheese) offerings and frequented by extrajernos. I thought the food could be okay, and it is in the nice yuppie setting, but our dining experience was marred by poor service. The above places seemed to attract more Madrilenos. Worth at least a look.

We also found a couple of interesting tapas bars: 1. Loa Angeles (comidas espanoles tradicionales) cerca calle del Aquila Tabernillas y pza. de Puerto de Moro (cerca c/Bailan y Igelesia San Andres en zona de los Austrias. Very good food, atmosphere, and value with an offering of veggie and fish tapas. Very popular. Well know and old establishment; inexpensive y close to Palacio de Gaviria It is behind the El Corte Ingles at pza. de la Puerta del Sol.
