BOMB DESTROYS POLICE VAN IN SHERBROOKE ( 1ST TIME IN QUÉBEC)
A bomb destroyed a police minivan and injured an officer in downtown Sherbrooke on Wenesday, February 14, 2007.

Police chief Gaétan  Labbé said the whole force was in shock after explosives were found at the scene of the blast, wich happened at about 9am.

The explosion in downtown Sherbrooke was not preceded by any threats and no immediately claimed resposability for it.

Labbé told a news conference that it was the first time to his knowledge that anyone had planted a bomb on a  marked police car in Québec.

It definitely wasn't an accident said Labbé.

He said the 240 members of the city force were even more stunned because there were no threats before the explosion and no one immediately claimed responsability.

They don't know the motive for the bombing, or whether it was directed at a single officer, the force or police in general.

Minutes before the blast, the officer had parked the vehicule and walked away from it for a few minutes.

Shortly after his return, the bomb exploded and the minivan caught fire. The officer was rushed to the hospital with minor injuries.

The blast dammaged several nearby vehicules and blew out windows of shops.

Labbé said 30 officers, led by the provincial police, "Sureté du Québec" would be on the team investigating the explosion. The Sherbrooke police force also plans to inspect all of its police vehicules for other ecplosives.
