History: Rachel was born in another reality, the Days of Future Past. She is the daughter of Cyclops and Phoenix (II or IV), Jean Grey. When she was in her early teens her mother was killed in an explosion caused by Mastermind in Pittsburgh. The Government decided to outlaw mutants and restarted the Sentinels program, later the Sentinels concluded that the best way to deal with the mutant threat was to take over the whole country. Xavier’s school was attacked by the military and many present died; Rachel was brought to Ahab’s labs.

There for months she was drugged, hypnotised and brainwashed and finally she gave in, becoming the prototype of Ahab’s houndsWith her inherited telepathy she had to trace psychic scents of other mutants and point the way for the military. Unnoticed by Ahab, Rachel stayed in a mindlock with each target when they were killed, and with each death she fueled her shame, grief and anger to the point where she was able to resist and attack Ahab. Even though she was quickly defeated by the Sentinels, she had managed to scar Ahab’s face forever

In the following months Rachel was able to resist all attempts of reprogramming her into a hound and she was brought to the containment camp, where the remaining X-Men had been sent. There Rachel learned that in the meantime most other super-beings (mutant or not) had either been killed or imprisoned

In the camp the X-Men and Rachel’s lover Franklin Richards came up with a way to neutralize their power-inhibiting collars. This allowed Rachel to send the consciousness of the adult Katherine Pryde back in time to take over young Kitty’s body to warn the X-Men about their dark future, and ask their help in preventing it by stopping the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly, a key event that set the Mutant Registration Act in motion Rachel’s teammates attempted to attack the Sentinels‘ main operation base but they all got killed; at least they provided Rachel with enough time to ensure the safe return of Kate’s consciousness.

Even though Kate and the X-Men had succeded in the past, the future was unchanged. In a safe hideout Rachel projected her astral self into the past to investigate why they had failed. Floating over New York she discovered that by accident she had sent Kate cross-time into another timeline’s past.

As she prepared to return to the future she got the attention of the Phoenix Force, which was just passing by. At first mistaking it for Jean, it soon discovered that this was a future daughter of Jean, with a similar psychic resonance. Amazed by this timely anomaly it probed deeper and found out about the life of pain and misery that Rachel had led, yet she had never given up. Impressed by another such passionate creature, the Force decided to follow Rachel through the timestream.

Back in the future, Rachel passed out from the strain of the journey and the Force revealed itself to Kate. She herself had nothing left to live for, but she asked the Force to give Rachel the chance for a fresh start.

The next day Rachel and Kate broke into the facalties of Project Nimrod, a new Super Sentinel. It was a suicide mission, once inside they planted a nuclear bomb, but shortly before the explosion Kate said the codeword “Dark Phoenix“ which was the sign for the Force to supercharge Rachel’s power to send her back in time - physically. Rachel was unaware that she hosted the Force’s essence and her memory was supressed by it; these conditions were part of the deal as Kate had wanted to give Rachel a new life, without the ghosts of her past haunting her.

Having Cyclops and Phoenix as parents in her timeline, she was shocked to discover that in this timeline Jean Grey had died. Learning that Cyclops would be the father of another child than her, Rachel sneaked into the house of Jean Grey’s parents. Touching the Shi’ar empathic crystal she vowed to take on the codename of her mother, Phoenix, in honor of the mother, that no longer was alive in this new reality.

Phoenix III tracked her down to the Hellfire Club and was was stopped short of killing her by Wolverine, who stabbed Rachel with his claws. Fleeing to heal herself, she was fooled by Spiral and taken to Mojoworld

The horrors she went through in the Mojoverse are unknown, but after months she managed to escape and emerged in London. Rachel was not sure if she could return to the X-Men, when she was suddenly attacked by both a team of Warwolves, trying to get her back.Only because of the timely interference of Kitty, Kurt, Meggan and Captain Britain, Rachel could escape capture. Her former friends welcomed Phoenix III with open arms and after she was informed about the X-Men’s “death“ in Dallas, Rachel inspired the formation of Excalibur.

While helping her teammate Meggan to search for her origin, Rachel mindprobed her teammate and discovered the reason for their unexplained "mergers". They had similarly structured memories. Rachel's were scrambled and mixed with false memories, so she had to live in the present, Meggan's was a natural state, as she accepts the past without regret, choosing to live for the moment.

Not before long, Rachel discovered that the usage of the Phoenix powers was responsible for her scrambled memory. To give her memory time to reassert itself Rachel willed the Force to be dormant, but when they returned to the team, they had to deal with Necrom, the Anti-Phoenix.

Centuries ago a sorcerer named Necrom had observeved the first contact between the Force and a human named Feron. Unexpected he attacked and stole a portion of the Force, which he left to incubate in a corpse, the Anti-Phoenix. Now another Necrom accesed this body and through it dared to wrest the full Force from Rachel. She had no choice but to reactivate it and fight for her right to wield it.

In outer space the two fought to a stalemate, but at last Necrom exploded when he attempted to absorb more Phoenix energy that he could handle. Rachel too was mortally injured in the battle and was returned to earth by the goddess Roma.

When Professor X and Jean Grey probed the catatonic Rachel, they met the Phoenix Force. It revealed Rachel’s history to them and how it met Rachel and that she upon Kate Pryde’s request in the future it had scrambled her memory. Rachel’s body had been so much injured in the battle with Necrom that it needed special healing and nurturing. Swearing to protect Rachel inside itself, the Force departed to the stars.

In outer space the Force encountered Galactus again and the World Devourer told it the truth about itself. As long as it had been simply existing it was the sum of all that lives, but to provide itself with a conscience it needed energy to feed off, energy that else would have been used as lifeforce for future generations. Shocked that again it was responsible for mass destruction by wanting to explore humanity, the Force waited till Rachel had fully recovered. Afterwards it handed control back to Rachel and gave up all feelings and awareness.

Rachel returned to earth to her teammates, this time with a complete memory. She only came back to say farewell since she felt responsible for the her future timeline and wanted to deal with Ahab’s crimes. Of course her teammates opted to help her and they made a time-jump to a point two years after Rachel had escaped.

Once in the future world, Rachel also discovered the truth behind Widget. It was her old friend Kate Pryde, who had been captured by Ahab, and accidentally merged with Sentinel parts while scanning timewave frequencies for the escaped Rachel.

Together with a team of future super-beings, Excalibur managed to change the directives of the Sentinels of the era to preserve all life, thereby ending the genocide that had prevailed for years; only Ahab escaped.

Upon returning Captain Britain was missing as he was stuck in the time-stream. The team moved on, and when they resettled to Muir Island, Jean Grey visited them along with Xavier and Cylops. Jean had decided to finally marry Scott and the first person she told this was Rachel with whom Jean wanted to make up for not being able to accept her at first.
After a short while it became painfully clear that Rachel, a temporal anamoly herself, was still connected with Captain Britain, as they switched body parts a few times. With the help of the sorceress Amanda Sefton, aka Day Tripper, Excalibur managed to pluck Brian back, but to do so Rachel had to exchange places with him. On the happiest day of her life (the marriage of Scott and Jean) Rachel entered the time-stream to a fate unknown.

Known superhuman powers: Phoenix II has the ability to exist in any environment without harm, project force bolts of incalculable power and create force fields. She also possesses the power of telepathy, illusion-casting; her link with the Phoenix force gives her vast psionic ability to manipulate time, space, matter, and energy for virtually any purpose.

Source of superhuman powers: (innate telepathic abilities) genetic mutation, (other psionic powers). Rachel Summers is a host for the Phoenix Force, a manifestation of a primal force of the universe which embodies the concepts of life and passion, especially the passion to create and destroy, and derives its power from the psyches of all living beings in the universe.
