She always looked up to the super-heroes in the Marvel world. Patsy married Buzz Baxter and continued to stay in shape as an athlete while he worked for the Roxxon's Brand Corporation. It was here Patsy meet the Beast shortly after he gained his furry form. Beast then agreed to help her become a superhero, so one day she came to Avengers' mansion and demanded that he keep his promise. Patsy had divorced Buzz and wanted some excitement in her life. Patsy went along with the Avengers to investigate the Brand Corporation and there she discovered the superheroine costume of the Cat, who had now became Tigra. The costume augmented her own athletic abilities and she became the Hellcat! Patsy was offered Avengers membership but choose reserve status so she could train with Moondragon, but later joined the Defenders. It was with this group that she met and fell in love with Damion Hellstrom. They married and Patsy retired, but soon this marriage fell apart. Hellstrom became Hellstorm and changed to his evil satannic ways. Patsy soon became insane and in a near-vegetable state. Hellstorm kept her locked up in the upstairs of their house. The being Deathsurge sensed her pain and took her life for her, by seperating her soul from her body. Patsy's lifeforce was soon captured by Mephisto. The Grim Reaper used Hellcat's soul and pitted her and fellow dead Avengers in a battle with the real ones. The deceased Avengers soon turned on the Reaper and returned to hell, but Mockingbird tried to tell Hawkeye something before they disappeared. Hawkeye along with the Thunderbolts later battled Mephisto and journeyed into hell to rescue Mockingbird, but mistakenly retrieved Hellcat. This was what Mockingbird and Hellstorm wanted all along. Patsy now given a second chance, wrote a novel "Gidget Goes To Hell" about her life and returned to her hometown. But she soon fell in battle with Dormammu and her former husband Hellstorm, who now is a full demonic being ruling his own section of hell. She exposed Hellstorm as the true son of Satannish and grandson of Dormammu. Defeating them and gaining spiritual powers, Hellcat soon rejoined the reformed Defenders along with her former teammates, Hulk, Namor, Dr. Strange, Silver Surfer, Nighthawk and Valkyrie.
