Capcom has a HUGE assortment of big name characters in this game, most are from old video game titles, some were created just for this game. Capcom really went back to it's roots with these characters, some characters weren't popular for the fact they sucked, then there's the greats who lacked popularity. This transition of random characters to a 2d fighting game is incredible, Capcom truly outdone themselves and made this game great.

Mega Man is probably the cheapest opponent you could ever face, any kid can walk up to the arcade and smash buttons all day and probably beat the game. He originated from the "Mega Man" games, of course, and they did a great job with his character, especially his Super moves. Roll is Mega Man's sister, but unfortunatly, she wasn't as lucky during her creation, she's basically slower and has weaker moves.

Servebot (Servbot) and Tron Bonne are characters from the Mega Man series, and they have no business in this game. Probably the worst characters ever allowed in a 2d fighting game.

Captain Commando (CAPtain COMando) was supposed to be the biggest Capcom character, he was kinda famous when the "Captain Commando" walkfight game became a success in the arcades. The game was alright, but the flaw wasn't himself or the gameplay, the other characters in the game lacked appeal. They're still his assists in the Marvel VS Capcom series, but without them he'd still be a dominant and popular player in the game.

Strider (Strider Hiryu) was one of the popular characters, not as popular as Mega Man, but he did have his own game that developed into a sequel ("Strider 2"). He has some cheap moves, but overall he's one of the best characters created in this game. They did a great job with his sword and special moves, such a good job they had to tone him down.

Jill (Jill Valentine) is from "Resident Evil 2", at first I thought this was a mistake, but they did a good job with her character especially since she was never designed as a cartoon. She's one of the reasons why the game was so successful, originality at it's finest.

SonSon was originally an old side scrolling game ("SonSon"), they did a good job creating this monkey from such an old game.

Hayato (Hayato Kanzaki) was originally from "Star Gladiator", and the problem with that game was the similarities to "Star Wars". Whole lightsabre thing made it a little too obvious.

Jin (Jin Saotome) was originally from "Cyberbots", he was kinda popular, but his popularity really increased in the first Marvel VS Capcom game.

Street Fighters

Ryu, Ken (Ken Masters), Akuma (Gouki), Chun-Li, Bison (Vega), Guile, Cammy, Charlie (Nash), Dan (Dan Hibiki), Dhalsim, Sakura, and Zangief.

Dark Stalkers

Morrigan, Anakaris, BB Hood (Baby Bonnie Hood), and Felicia.

New Characters

Amingo, Ruby Heart, and Abyss were created just for Marvel VS Capcom 2, and I really have no clue why they would throw new characters in who didn't even have a storyline. Ruby Heart is a fairly decent design, but Amingo and Abyss are some of the worst characters ever created. The fact a boss is so easy to defeat is just plain stupid, the only thing that made this game great was fighting against human players.
