Might as well have a vote for the popular characters you believe deserve to be added in the next Marvel VS Capcom series. I'll also be listing characters who were rumored to have been created in the "BETA" stages of Marvel VS Capcom 3, which does open up the possibilities that the game might still be in production, or proves it was scrapped due to lack of profit or interest.
The problem with that, Marvel VS Capcom 2 was released in limited copies, so they never really had a chance to profit from the game, and I've never see new copies of the game because they all sell out. When Dreamcast died, and arcades declined, they just gave up.
The game was a huge success on the Dreamcast, but the initial rumor was Capcom didn't like the idea of Marvel characters being more popular than their own characters. This was something I noticed during the Street Fighter VS SNK series, and it appeared as if Capcom was trying to battle any other fighting games on the market. If you think about it, the Marvel characters were generally selected by popularity, while Capcom found themselves digging up outdated characters and inventing random new characters just to fit in.
So the reason why this game was never released could have been based on Capcom's fear of being upstaged. It's not only the fact Marvel had more appealing characters, but they also began releasing movies which pushed them even higher. Capcom sure as fuck can't compete with that, so that's still one of the various possibilities that can be factored.
The majority of the rumors to "Marvel VS Capcom 3" have been nothing but lies, and I've heard some of the dumbest ideas you would ever imagine. So I'm listing my top 10 dumbest rumors for the amusement of everyone, then I'll list my top 10 favorite ideas.

10 - Adding Killing/Finishing Moves (Think it's funny, but stupid and not gonna happen)
9 - Blade Character Added (Just hype from the movies)
8 - Marvel VS DC (Not a bad idea, but it's still stupid since they don't mix well by design)
7 - Create a Character (Kinda makes sense, but no)
6 - Mind Control (This would be way too cheap)
5 - One-hit Kills (Kills the challenge of the game)
4 - Eating Characters (I'd be pissed if Hulk ate any of my characters)
3 - Tearing off Limbs (Reminds me of 'Time Killers', but it wouldn't work with every character)
2 - Stan Lee Character (He's the man but he's old, leave him alone)
1 - Fantastic Four Characters (Aside from the Human Torch, they suck)
Top 10 Brilliant Rumors
10 - Double-Team (Special move to hold a character, another character attacks them)
9 - Stage/Environment Damage (Dents remain in the ground, everywhere the entire match)
8 - Fake Special Moves (Would completely throw off an opponent)
7 - Free For All Mode (Everyone fights at the same time the entire match, sounds interesting)
6 - Music Modes (I think the X-Box already proved it's a good idea)
5 - Throw Reversals (Always thought it was a great idea)
4 - Stage/Environment Interaction (Thought of Hulk tossing a street light at someone or the place flooding)
3 - Animated Endings (Just makes sense, we have the technology to do so)
2 - Damage/Fatigue (Bruises, Blood, Torn clothing, all damage remains till the next fight)
1 - Internet Multiplay (This is fucking brilliant)
Honestly, the closest real rumors I've heard was a version called "Marvel VS Capcom 2 and 1/2" that was supposed to be the same version with more stages, and all the secret characters from Marvel VS Capcom, and characters from the prior series including Apocalypse, Onslaught, and Cyber Akuma. This has never been released, confirmed, or denied. More than likely there will NOT be another version of the game due to the lack of interest in 2d fighting games and arcades in general.
