In spring and early summer a sea breeze is called the masetral and keeps the temperature down along the coast. The winter weather is defined by two winds. The south-easterly siroko from the Sahara brings warm moist air to the mainland and can produce a heavy cloud cover. This wind also has the steady strength that sailors love. The north-easterly bura blows from the interior to the coast in powerful gusts, bring dry air and blowing away winds. Summer dry periods can last upto 100 days at a time. |
| Geograhy: The topography of the country is divided into the lowland basin beteween the Sava and Drava Rivers which expands to the mountains and hills in the north, the mountainous karst region of the Dinaric range and the littoral which runs from Istria south through Dalmatia along the Adriatic. Croatia's offshore Isands are every bit as beautiful as those in Greece. There are 1185 islands and islets along the submerged Adriatci coastline. The largest of these are: Cres, Krk,Losinj, Pag and Rab in the north. Dugi otok in the middle and Braca, Hrva Korcula. Mljet and Vis in the south. Although islands such as Kurcula, Rab, Hvar and Mljet are lush most of the smaller islands are barren, with high mountains tht drop right into the ocean. |
