Keeping the British End Up: Four Decades of Saucy Cinema

by Simon Sheridan
The British tradition of 'saucy postcard' humour - boobs, bums and boorish innuendo - is perhaps best exemplified by the long running Carry On movies. But there is a forgotten cinema of saucier 'X certificate' movies.
Simon Sheridan traces the history of the British sex film from its beginnings in such coy nudist camp films as Naked As Nature Intended through to its boom years with the Confessions series and its many imitators, to its demise following censorship clampdowns and the introduction of home video in the early eighties.
240 pages. Over 100 illustrations. Many previously unpublished photos of Mary Millington, Fiona Richmond, Suzy Mandel and Robin Askwith.

Reviews:

  • FILM REVIEW - 5 stars out of 5, Book of the Month
Lifts the bed sheets on an unjustly ignored area of the nation's film history. Hugely informative and entertaining, this enthusiastically written and scrupulously researched study, with its plethora of rare stills, should delight film and nostalgia buffs alike.
  • HOTDOG
Drools affectionately over the stars and films of the British sex industry from 1958 to 1983 with detailed reviews. It's fun to see how many 'serious' actors slummed it and covered themselves in sauce.
  • TOTAL FILM
An engrossing survey of saucy X-certificate sex farces. Sheridan's tome is full of titbits, but also reveals the seed behind the sauce: the hardcore inserts shot for the overseas market and Mary Millington's tragic suicide at the peak of her fame.
  • MAYFAIR
Packed with information and with heaps of pictures, this weighty book by Simon Sheridan is a must for fans.

Come Play with Me: The Life and Films of Mary Millington

by Simon Sheridan
The official biography of Mary Millington, published in 1999 to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of her death. From Mary's quiet childhood in 1950's Surrey through to her introduction to glamour modelling and hardcore porn, her story makes compelling reading.
The book chronicles her superstar status, starring in hugely successful big screen movies like Come Play With Me (1977) (directed by George Harrison Marks), still the longest running British movie ever; her high-class prostitution (she allegedly counted PM Harold Wilson and actress Diana Dors as lovers), a celebrated trial at the Old Bailey and her descent into drugs which would eventually contribute to her tragic death at the age of only 33.
Priced at only £14.99 (UK), the book was written with the full co-operation of Mary's family and friends. This is the first opportunity for Millington fans to re-visit the incredible life and career of Britain's only icon of sex!
244 pages. Twenty pages in full colour.

Reviews:

  • FILM REVIEW 2000-2001 (available from Reynolds and Hearn)
Come Play with Me is celebrated as one of the top ten 'Books of the Year' (available directly from FAB Press).
  • FILM REVIEW - 5 stars out of 5
"Simon Sheridan is to be congratulated not only for his excellent research, but also for treating Millington with dignity. A first rate job".
  • LOADED - Book of the Month, 9 out of 10
"Definitely one for fans of retro-porn chic, this could even trigger the return of the flicked fringe and a call for the National Health Service to reintroduce the skimpy uniforms all nurses evidently wore back then".
  • PENTHOUSE
"Thoroughly researched...Sheridan has treated his subject with sensitivity and respect. With plenty of enticing detail and juicy gossip, this is a glowing tribute; a love letter to a true porn princess".

The Amazing Mary Millington

by Mary Millington & David Weldon
Published in 1979, Mary's spurious 'autobiography' is a hotch-potch of outrageous lies and fantastic fabrications. The book was co-written by the late David Weldon (Mary's probation officer during her infamous Old Bailey trial in November 1977) who pieced it together after a series of interviews with the star. Unfortunately Mary stretched the truth rather too much claiming, among other things, that her father was a German mountain-climber and she was once married to the heir of a French porcelain business! She also shaved ten years off her birth-date. Mary only tells it like it is when talking about aspects of her childhood, her mother's illness and her brushes with the law and personal battles against censorship.
192 pages. Illustrated with 13 extremely rare black & white photographs, including Mary posing topless at Number 10 Downing Street, the book also contains 40 pages written by the National Campaign for the Reform of the Obscene Publications Act.
The book was reprinted in magazine form by David Sullivan in 1984 with new, more explicit photographs, but the original paperback book is now incredibly difficult to find. Never re-published, it is so rare that even the British Library do not possess a copy.
