Dear Baby

by Mary Kay Toy

There's no sign that you did indeed exist
"It was for the best" I hear someone insist
"At least you didn't get to know it"  friends sympathize
Words meant to help but hurt when anyone tries

I know you were there, growing inside
I knew you well and I loved you with pride
I loved you before I even knew you were there
Just knowing God would entrust a life in my care

I loved you before you began to take form
Oh how I loved you, yet you were not born
I loved you before I knew you were a girl or a boy
It didn't matter, you were sure to bring joy

I loved you before I saw your little mouth or nose
Before I had a chance to count your ten fingers and toes
I loved you before I saw the color of your hair and eyes
I'd have to wait...for God's secret surprise!

I loved you with every flitter and flutter
There's nothing so special, no feeling is better
I loved your kicks, punches from fists
A tender reminder of your life in my midst

I loved you inside my mind-my dreams-imagination
Announcing, "I'm with child" was cause for celebration
I loved you as I shopped and fixed and fussed
A home ready and welcome for you was a must

I loved you as Daddy gently rubbed on my tummy
His talking to you made me laugh, it was funny
The love from my hand circled my belly with care
It was love for you, as parents, we'd share

Before they would ever lay you to nuzzle at my breast
I was your Mommy and I did my very best
I did what was needed to keep you healthy
Watching my womb swell, your life within me

You are my child, my love for you will never stand still
I loved you here, also in heaven...I always will
