First Meeting

  1. VENI SANCTE SPIRITUS—COME HOLY GHOST: The Novena for Pentecost is the first and most venerable of all novenas. It was instituted by Our Divine Lord Himself: "But wait here in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high." (Luke 24:49) It was made, out of obedience, by Christ's own dear Mother, the Immaculate Spouse of the Holy Spirit, whose ineffable beauty drew forth. Pope Leo XIII officially decreed an annual Novena before Pentecost in His encyclical on the Holy Ghost, Divinum Illud, of May 9, 1897. In preparation for Pentecost, discuss the visible ‘sending’ of the Holy Ghost, which is the special object of this glorious feast. Our Lord Jesus Christ prayed for His coming at the Last Supper: ''I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to dwell with you forever"(John 14:16), and He promised to send this Consoler. "When the Advocate has come, Whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth Who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness concerning Me... If I go, I will send Him to you." (John 15:26, 16:7) The sending of the Holy Ghost to the Apostles has no other end than to achieve the establishment of Christ’s One, True Church. Jesus had founded this Church upon Peter, but He left to the Holy Ghost the care of bringing it to perfection after His Ascension into Heaven. The Coming of the Divine Spirit was to fill the Apostles with power whereby they should render testimony to Jesus everywhere, even to the four corners of the earth. The work of the Holy Ghost, in the Church as in souls, is to lead all striving for holiness to its end and perfection. Pentecost is to be renewed in our souls. If we let ourselves be guided by Him through the grace and teaching of Christ's holy Church, which He vivifies, He will make Jesus reign in us, and form Jesus in us by the gentle action of His powerful grace, for Our Lord said, "He will glorify Me, because He shall receive of what is Mine, and shall declare it to you." (John 16:I4) (15 min. report; 10 min. discussion)

  1. THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS: The Fatima Children were told that the Sacred Heart of Jesus desires to be venerated with the Immaculate Heart of Mary; the Fatima Prayers exhort us to pray for the conversion of poor sinners through the infinite merits of the Sacred Heart. Review the article of St. Alphonsus Maria Liguori on Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus; and discuss means of making reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus; the great promise of the Nine First Fridays; Enthronement of the home to the Sacred Heart of Jesus; nocturnal hours of adoration and reparation. (15 min. report - 10 min. discussion) Reference: "Love, Peace, and Joy" by St. Gertrude; "The Holy Eucharist" by Liguori (pp. 229-234, "Notice on Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus"); selected sermons by Bishop Francis Konrad Maria, especially "The Humility of the Sacred Heart of Jesus", and "The Kingdom of the Precious Blood".
  1. THE COURT OF OUR HEAVENLY QUEEN: We cannot hope to dwell one day in the Heavenly Court of Our Immaculate Queen unless we strive diligently in the pursuit of holiness. The blessed who already dwell in Her Heavenly Court are inspirations for us in this pursuit of that life of holiness to which Jesus calls us. Read the following list of feasts, and choose 2-3 saints to reflect upon this meeting: St. Boniface; St. Norbert of Magdeburg (Xanten); St. Erasmus, Holy Helper; St. Francis Caracciolo; and St. Clotilde. Also: Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. (15 min. report & reflection; discuss briefly the lessons learned and virtues taught by their lives, and how to practically apply these virtues in our own daily lives.)

Second Meeting

  1. FORCES OF ERROR: Unmasking Chardin’s Modernist Manifesto. Continue our review of the career of this foremost architect of the new religion of Vatican II. Discuss "Priest, Paleontologist, and Evolutionist?" and the explanation of the centerpiece of Chardinian doctrine, "Christogenesis: A Universe at One with Christ". Examine this perverse teaching in light of Pope St. Pius X’s condemnation of Modernism; discuss examples found in the Vatican II sect. 1. THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY IN DOCTRINE AND DEVOTION: Our Lady of Aachen; Our Lady of the Valley; Mater Divinae Gratiae - Mother of Divine Grace (June 9); Our Lady of Fatima - June 13th Apparition; Our Mother of Perpetual Help June 26); Third Apparition of Our Lady of Marienfried (June 25) and her important message; The Most Pure Heart of Mary (June 28). (10 min. report; 10 min. discussion) Reference: Selected sermons by Bishop Francis Konrad Maria; commemorative bulletin for tenth anniversary of Episcopal Consecration (see Marian shrines); article on the picture of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (Salve Maria Regina, June issue)
  1. STRIVING FOR SANCTITY: Prayer, the Chief Duty of the Christian: Continue our consideration of the third condition which St. Thomas Aquinas lays down for authentic prayer: piety, i.e., with humility and confidence. Study the teaching of St. Alphonsus Maria Liguori on the "foundation of our confidence", which consists in the promise made by Our Lord Jesus Christ: "Ask, and you shall receive." Certainly God would not have exhorted us to ask Him for favors, if He did not mean to grant them; but this is the very thing to which He exhorts us so strongly, and which is repeated so often in the Scriptures—pray, ask, seek, and you shall obtain what you desire. Discuss particularly the great merit of preserving our confidence when we feel no sensible consolation in prayer, and why we are more certain of being heard at this time than when we enjoy great feeling. (15 min. report; 10 min. discussion)

    Third Meeting

  2. CATHOLIC DOCTRINE: Introduction to the Catechism, part II. "How we are to fulfill the purpose for which we were created and attain to eternal happiness" - We must know Him, love Him, and serve Him in this life, and thus attain to eternal happiness in the next. Knowing God consists of faith in the truths that He has revealed to us; serving God implies obedience to His Holy Will, in which our love of God consists. In order to do so, we must avail ourselves of the Divine assistance by using the means of grace instituted by Jesus Christ, the chief of which are the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Sacraments, and Prayer; for Our Lord tells us: "Without Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5) We are obligated to know God, because He is the eternal Truth; to love Him because He is the most bountiful and lovable God; and to serve Him, because He is the Sovereign Lord. (15 min. report; 10 min. discussion) Reference: Traditional Catholic Catechism-Introduction, part II.

  3. CATHOLIC LITURGY AND TRADITION: Discuss the historical origin of the Feast of Corpus Christi and the reason for instituting this beautiful festival honoring the Most Blessed Sacrament on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. Consider also the importance of making reparation to the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus; the significance of the "Fatima Prayers", taught by the Angel of Portugal to the three little children, expressing the profound Mystery of the Blessed Eucharist; the importance of a fervent spiritual preparation for the reception of Holy Communion; the importance of spiritual communions when unable to receive sacramentally; what is meant by living a truly "Eucharistic life", and how this always evident in souls who are fervently living their Total Consecration to Mary. (15 min. report - 10 min. discussion) Reference: "The Holy Eucharist" by Liguori; "The Blessed Eucharist" by Mueller; Catholic Doctrine lessons on the Holy Eucharist and Holy Communion; Sermons for the Feast of Corpus Christi: "When Jesus Walks Among Us", "The Bread of Life," and "He Who Eats of This Bread Shall Live Forever"; article "The Angel of Portugal"; article "This Historical Origin of the Feast of Corpus Christi".

  4. THE COURT OF OUR HEAVENLY QUEEN: How does meditating upon the lives of the saints inspire us to a more perfect living of our consecration to our Heavenly Queen? Read the following list of feasts, and choose 2-3 saints to reflect upon this meeting: St. Anthony of Padua; St. Basil the Great; St. Vitus, one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers; St. John Francis Regis; St. Ephrem the Deacon; St. Paulinus of Nola; St. Medard; St. Margaret of Scotland; The Nativity of St. John the Baptist; Sts. Peter & Paul; St. Aloysius Gonzaga; and St. Irenaeus.
Reference: Martyrology ("Court of Our Heavenly Queen" for June), "The Fourteen Holy Helpers".

    Fourth Meeting

  5. FORCES OF ERROR: Unmasking Chardin’s Modernist Manifesto: "One Error Leads To Another". Discuss Teilhard’s error of Monism and its practical application in the critical area of Creation. If, as Chardin teaches, there is no Adam, then there is no Original Sin. And if there is no Original Sin, then there is no need for man to be redeemed from Original Sin. Discuss how this destroys the very concept of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Reference: "Unmasking Chardin's Marxist Manifesto"; Encyclical of Pope St. Pius X on Modernism.

  6. STRIVING FOR SANCTITY: As we begin the long Pentecost Season, let us consider the seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost, through which we bear spiritual fruit in our souls. Review the doctrinal definition of each of the Gifts, and then discuss what is meant by "cooperation" with them, i.e., the fervent practical application of our faculties of mind and body which is essential to an authentic operation of the power of the Holy Ghost in our souls. Finally, discuss each of the Fruits of the Holy Ghost which result from our diligent cooperation with His Gifts in our souls. (15 min. report; 10 min. discussion) Reference: Liturgical booklet for the Pentecost Novena (introduction and daily reflections); Pentecost sermons by the Most Reverend Bishop; Catechism lessons and audiotapes on the Gifts of the Holy Ghost.

  7. STRIVING FOR SANCTITY: Prayer, the Chief Duty of the Christian: Continue our consideration of the third condition which St. Thomas Aquinas lays down for authentic prayer: piety, i.e., with humility and confidence. St. Alphonsus Maria Liguori now teaches about the "prayer of sinners", and proves that God most certainly does hear the pleas of those who are burdened with sin. If this were not the case, no sinner would ever find forgiveness and be brought to repentance. In order to be heard, however, he must humbly acknowledge his sins and implore the Divine Assistance for the purpose of overcoming his vices. God is not like frail humans, who bear a grudge after suffering an injury; He has promised that He will not remember our sins if we sincerely repent of them.
