Umbrella cockatoo
Latin Name:  Cacatua Alba

Also Known As:  White Crested Cockatoo, Great White Cockatoo

Length:  45cm (18inches)
Umbrella Cockatoos are all white except for the underside of their wings and tail, which are tinged with a light yellow.  It is the large white crest on top of their head which gives them the name 'Umbrella'.  The beak, legs and feet are all a blackish grey colour.  Males have black eys and females have red-brown eyes.  Umbrella Cockatoos have a life expectancy of approximately 70 years or more.

Umbrella Cockatoos are native to Australia and Indonesia and can be found in forests and farmland.  In their native areas, they are considered an agricultural pest.

Umbrella's or U2's as they are abbreviated to, can make good pets to well suited owners, and are the most affectionate of all the cockatoos.  This has earned them the name 'velcro bird'.  These birds love to be cuddled and form strong bonds with their owners.  They are very intelligent and curious.  Their natural distructive behaviour means that you cannot leave them out of their cage unattended, because you will most likely find most of your household posessions in shreds!

U2's don't tend to obtain such an extensive volcabulary as some other species, but if you spend some time, they will learn to say several phrases.  Umbrella's have a VERY loud and harsh scream, and do not make at all good pets for people living in an apartment building.
