Rocks and Minerals
Human Body
Quarter 1:
We will be studying the Human Body.  We will learn how bones and muscles work and work together.  We will learn about joints, tendons, and ligaments.
Then we will study the digestive and circulatory systems. This is a preliminary for our food chemistry unit 4th quarter.
We will also discuss how all systems are related.  We will learn about reflexes and stimulus response.
There will be a test on the bones. One after joints/muscles, and a third on the digestive/circulatory systems.
Quarter 3 is on rocks and minerals.  We will be learning to identify minerals, and also studying the layers of the Earth and volcanoes and earthquakes.  Students will conduct many experiments and use a field guide to help them in their mineral identification.  Their final test will be 2 days.  Day 1: complete the many experiments on their new mineral.  Day 2: write up a 5-8 paragraph essay about their prediction, results, and procedures.

Magnets and Electricity
Quarter 2.  We are studying magnets, electricity, and electromagnets.  Please supervise your child with any electric experiments they may want to try at home.
We will have three tests:
1 a written test over Chapter 7 of science book on magnets. One written test on  electricity . The third  is a hands-on test on electricity where students apply what they have learned by working with a partner to make a flashlight .
Quarter 4 We end the year by studying food and nutrition.  We will test foods to see if they have starch, fat, sugar, or protein in them, and also study about the Food Pyramid and nutritional values of foods.  You may want to have your child help plan menus, or discuss the nutritional labels on foods.  Children may have fun experimenting with cooking or learning about foods from other countries/cultures as we study this unit also.  Bon Appetite. There will be a hands-on test at the end of the unit requiring students to use their knowledge and notes to test a mystery food for all 4 nutrients and then answer questions about it.
