Did you know that 23%
(1,130 species) of mammals
are considered endangered?
The black-footed ferret and the imperial parrot are both considered "endangered" by the Canadian Museum of Nature.
The great auk were hunted by northern Europeans for their feathers until the last known pair was killed in Iceland in 1844.
Conservation Organizations:
The World Wildlife Fund was founded in 1961 and now has offshoots in over a hundred different countries worldwide. WWF uses both local, community programs and political negotiation to help endangered species on our planet. For more information on the World Wildlife Fund, watch the video in three installments: one, two, and three. You can even play a [really hard] game called Caught in the Act! about catching poachers around the world!

The IUCN (or
International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resourse, aka: World Conservation Union) was founded in Switzerland in 1948. The IUCN focuses on cutting-edge conservation research through it's Species Survival Commission and on raising environmental awareness. It also annually publishes the IUCN Red List of threatened and endangered species.
BIOTECHNOLOGY
and
ANIMAL EXTINCTION
"The real goal [of the animal-extinction fight] is the management of the eroding gene pools of endangered species."
