Minutes from March 14th, 2003 MASA Meeting 12:30pm 305 Tier I. Welcome/ Approval of minutes from last meeting. The minutes of the last meeting approved. There were very few members in attendance, but we did have quorum. II. President’s Report Thanks for all the help at the APALA conference, it was a huge success for the department and the students. The editing of proceedings almost complete, will soon be printed, bound and sent out to the participants who opted to purchase a copy. There has been a suggestion by the strategic planning committee for a proposal to form a faculty of social science (anthropology would be included). This is still in the discussion stages, currently being used as a forum to voice administrative dissatisfaction with the organization of the faculty of arts as it stands. It is recommended that all returning students take a look at the proposal, copies are in Barbs office (442 Flet. Argue) or you can e-mail the MASA exec. to receive an electronic copy. Upcoming changes in the department next year: *Ellen Judd has completed her term as head of the department so a new head will be elected for the fall. We do not know who has applied for the position as of yet. *Dr. Burke will be leaving in June. *Dr. Allaire will also be gone leaving the department with two archaeologists. *Dr. Rokala will also be leaving soon. This means we may have a shortage of profs for all physical anthro courses and archy courses as well, although the department will be hiring sessionals. III. Vice-President’s Report Heather was unable to attend. Currently there are elections going on for the GSA, grad students should look into this. IV. Secretary/Treasurer’s Report The financial report from APALA conference: Expenses = $3,399.67, Income = $3,650.35, so we are ahead by $250.68 right now. We have been told that the Alumni will contribute $300, but have not yet seen an official letter or money. Also, the cost of proceedings has not yet been totalled, but will be offset by the $5.00 charge for purchasing. We did not need to spend the $100 for the Christmas cheer board hampers since several faculty members donated. Our current bank balance is: $1,848.38 -$ 750.00 (goes back to U of Sask for APALA start-up fees) = $ 1,098.38. Our cash on hand is $37.22. V. Social Director’s Report Thanks to everyone who attended the potluck, and thanks to Adam for hosting, it was lots of fun. The mid-term plans for skating or drinks did not happen because nobody responded. Upcoming MASA social events: *Amy’s Home Alone for the First Time in Her Life Party. MASA Journal Editor’s Report Adam was the only editor in attendance. He reports that the journal is ready for printing and should be out by next week.
