MASA Meeting Minutes: November 27, 2002 | ||||||||
1) Barb handed out copies of the minutes from our last meeting for approval. They were approved by all in attendance. 2) President’s Report -colloquia attendance numbers: *Chris Trott’s = 12; *Terry Galloway’s = 15 -colloquia for next term: *Barb Sherriff- Geoarchaeology in Tunisia; * Possible second one with Rod Burchard- Visual Documentation of field research -holiday hamper update: enough food for 2+ hampers, $40 donated towards turkey, potatoes and gifts for kids -APALA update: -still need our own students to register; banquet booked at University Club; guest speaker: Scott Hamilton-plains archaeologist working at Lakehead U.; 3 workshops confirmed: visual documentation of fieldwork (Rod Burchard), writing for academia (Susan Frohlick & Ariane Burke) and flintknapping workshop (Gord Hill) 3) Vice-President’s Report -GSA meetings and funding, estimated $6.00/person but Heather is still meeting with the GSA. 4) Secretary/Treasure’s Report -current status of account: opened new account at bizsmart(through Staples): no fees, president holds my card, Roxie has the president’s card and has both codes; current balance is $1300.00, including start up funds from the U of S.; cash on hand is $147.89- we’ve made a total of $78 in membership fees this year, there are still some who have yet to pay....you know who you are.... -Food at the King’s Head: $18.06, Membership cards: $7.81, APALA program covers: $8.56, APALA delegate stationary:$12.81, APALA laser pointer door prize: $29.77 = $77.01 expenses so far this year -funding dedicated to conference: $750 start up funds from U of S (goes back to them), $400 from Anthro. Department, $534 from Arts Student Body Council, still have applications with Alumni and UMSU. - about $100 is dedicated to buying gifts for the cheer board hampers (5 kids at $20 each). 5) Social Director’s Report -Roxie was given extra roller skating passes if anyone wanted or if we wanted to go as a group. -holiday celebration ideas: roller skating, house party, night out, or ice skating -welcome back potluck: decided on Adam’s house on January 11, 2003; decided to have a turkey (no bread stuffing) 6) MASA Journal Editor’s Report -call for papers went out (posters are up), deadline is Jan. 10 7) Announcements of Upcoming Events -Department of Anthro. Colloquium series visiting scholar Jesper Boldsen will be giving 2 lectures: *The history of mortality in Europe since the end of the Ice age. Tues. Dec. 3 at 5:30pm, 409 Tier; *Reconstructing population prevalence’s of leprosy from skeletal signs-or how to build a castle with no foundation. Fri. Dec. 6 at 2:30pm, 302 Tier. -luncheon with Jesper Boldsen on Dec. 4 12:30pm at Daily Bread Café-all students welcome -Society for Applied Anthropology in Manitoba’s next meeting is Saturday Dec. 7 at 11:00am Pembina Trail Library, 2724 Pembina Hwy. Guest speaker will be Dave Taylor. 8) Business of the Day -Writing group proposed by Brian Barth: *1st meeting probably in second week of Jan for interested students and faculty.; *bi-weekly workshops on how to write papers, publications, CV’s etc...; *e-mail with details to follow. -reminder of registration for APALA (www.geocities/apala2003/) -Heather mentioned a very cool bog body exhibit in Ottawa and Calgary for anyone who will be in those cities at the time Meeting adjourned. |
