MASA Meeting October 10, 2003 I. The meeting was opened at 14:30 by President, Barb Hewitt. In attendance was Barb Hewitt, Amy Fay, Sharon Pokotylo, Ginna Berg, Sara Stephens, Vicky Woodward Kate Mossman, Allison Machovec, Adam Allentuck, and Laurie Shead. II. Vicky Woodward/Ginna Berg moved that the agenda be adopted. Carried. III. Financial Report: Sharon Pokotylo reported that the chequing account had $1030.53 and the petty cash had $51.50. She also reminded everyone who has not paid their dues to get in touch with her. IV. Business of the Day • Amy Fay/ Allison Machovec moved that the Minutes of the September 15, 2003 be adopted as read. Carried. • The committee for Victoria Woodward, the Undergraduate Program Committee Rep would involve discussion of making the University of Manitoba undergraduate anthropology program more competitive on the international level. Issues that Vicky brought up at the meeting before selecting the committee were 1. Changing the program from an Advanced to an Honours which would include a mini thesis paper. 2. Increasing the variety of courses offered in the program especially at the 3rd and 4th year levels. 3. The lack of a required number of 3rd and 4th year courses in the Advanced Degree. Teija Dedi pre-volunteered for the committee. At the meeting Sharon Pokotylo and Sara Stephens volunteered. All undergraduate students are encouraged to bring up issues with Vicky, so she can bring them up with the Program Committee. • MASA Colloquia. It was decided that if possible there would be two colloquia held a term. 1 would be students presenting, the 2nd would be a prof. Because of the lack of time it was thought to have one this term and three next term. In preparation for the APALA conference in January the student Colloquium will be held on November 14, 2003. Dr. Mark Lawall, a department of Classics prof has been approached about holding a colloquium next term and he has agreed. We have tentatively scheduled him for January 16, 2004. Sharon Pokotylo has to contact him with the date. The second students colloquium will be held on February 12, 2004. The final professor colloquium is scheduled for March 19, 2004. Barb Hewitt will approach Dr. Ellen Judd and Dr. Susan Frohlick to ask if they would present on this date. All colloquia are going to be held at 2:30 in the afternoon, with an informal outing afterwards. • The following annoucements were made: 1. MAS call for papers/ November 1st Conference is to be held at the Asper Center. It will be a relaxed day of presentations on Manitoba archaeology. Contact Barb Hewitt for information. 2. APALA Conference, Saskatoon SK, January 30-February 1, 2004. An unofficial call for papers has gone out, travelers must let Sharon Pokotylo and Amy Fay know if they are heading to the conference by the first week back after the break. We are in need of drivers over the age of 25yrs to drive the rental vans. 3. Evening of Excellence volunteers still needed. Sharon Pokotylo and Allison Machovec agreed to help. 4. SAAM membership $15.00. Next meeting November 5, 2003. 5. Department Colloquium Friday October 17, 2003. Dr. Denis Gagnon. 6. Open Discussion on Tiananmen by Dr Feng Congde, Thursday October 16, 2003. 7. Manitoba Moose Alumni Staff and Student Night, Saturday, October 11, 2003. 8. Classics Presentation October 26, 2003 with a wine and cheese afterwards. 9. Reminder to CAA volunteers to be at the Casino by 4:15 PM at the latest. V. Other Business 1. Hallowe’en Bake Sale and Bake Sale Party. The bake sale will be held on October 30 and 31, 2003 till all goodies run out. Pricing of goods will be done Thursday morning. 2. Hallowe’en Party Costume party at Section 8 hopefully, Amy Fay will talk to Amanda Linden about the use of the bar. 3. First Nations Weekend Retreat, next term. It will include teaching and other. There was lots of interest at the meeting. 4. A trip to the Manitoba Museum and an Artifact Replication Workshop with Kevin Brownly, interest was shown in a fieldtrip next term. Barb Hewitt will talk to Kevin Brownly about possible dates. 5. MASA shirt. Using the MASA logo on the front with Manitoba Anthropology Students Association on the back. The prefered colour was navy blue with white lettering. Anyone with garment industry contact could you please get information on cost from them and bring back to the executive. 6. Sara Stephens brought up that she knew where we could find a love seat and all we needed to do was haul it. Vicky Woodward and Barb Hewitt will figure out how to get it. VI. Meeting Adjourned 15:15. |
