Minutes of the MASA September 13, 2002 Meeting

In attendance:
Barb Hewitt, Heather Gill-Robinson, Andrew Wynes, Sara Johnson, Linda Larcombe, Eric Klemm, Lindsay Pawlyk, Kirsten Anderson, Amanda Linden, Amelia Fay, Manda Pilipovic, Brian Barth, Diana Good, Paul King, Victoria Woodward, Adam Allentuck, Doug Couch, Cory Jacques.

1.
Since the previous years’ president, vice-president and social director have not returned, and elections held in spring were not completed, the meeting was called to order by Barb Hewitt.  She introduced the group to MASA’s objectives and activities, and outlined the objectives for the meeting.  Attendees signed up for membership, and then it was suggested that elections be held so that planning of events for the year could begin.
This motion was unanimously approved.

2.
Elections were carried out, with the process overseen by Barb Hewitt, since she was the only returning member of last year’s executive.

Social Director – Kirsten Anderson
MASA Journal Editors – Diana Good, Adam Allentuck, Sara Johnson, Andrew Wynes

Department Council Reps – Barb Hewitt, Brian Barth, Heather Gill-Robinson
Graduate Programs Committee – Barb Hewitt, Linda Larcombe, Adam Allentuck
CT Shay Scholarship Committee – unfilled as yet, need to clarify if a grad student is required in this position

3. Announcements:
a. MASA meetings will be held informally – no use of Robert’s Rules of Order
b. Upcoming thesis defense and dissertation proposal defense
c. Prof. Don Brothwell’s visit next week as a distinguished lecturer.  He is giving two lectures, holding office hours, and attending a student luncheon co-hosted by MASA and UMAUSA (Heather and Diana will represent the organizations).  The department is providing funding for the luncheon, and it is open to all students.
d. Showcase 2002 call for abstracts for students in the social sciences.
e. APALA first call for papers.  The 2002-2003 conference is being held at the U of M, co-hosted by MASA and UMAUSA.

4. MASA Bank Account
a. The current bank balance is $544.67 as of September 13, 2002.  Petty cash stands at $79.08.  This is prior to the collection of membership fees today.
b. Twelve members paid for membership today, with six people requesting extensions, since they had no cash on them.  These six individuals have been noted, and voting privileges will not be extended to them in future until dues are paid.

5. GSA
a. The first meeting of the GSA has already passed, and as VP, Heather will get their schedule of planned meetings in order to attend the next meeting and bring us up to date.

6. Other Business
a. There was no other business arising from the meeting
