The agenda was amended to include an addition of the adoption of the minutes from the last meeting which would normally be placed after the adoption of the agenda to the final order of business to give all members a chance to review the report. IV. Other Business A. Social Events i. Welcome back night out. Ginna Berg looked the social director looked into several possibilities for a quiet night off campus which would allow our members to interact in a non academic setting. The choice of the setting of the night out was given to the members. The majority 19-5-0 preferred the Bar Tenders Underground in Corydon over the other two suggestions of the Kings Head and Pockets for various reasons. The Night out has been scheduled for Saturday September 27 to give time for all those employed to book off work. The Bar Tenders opens at 9:30. ii. Vicky's Cabin. Victoria Woodward and her family have kindly opened up their cabin in Ontario for a small group of MASA members. A hand out was passed out for anyone interested, and left in the Anthropology student lounge. This event is a first come first serve deal. Anyone interested MUST contact Ginna Berg by Friday September 19, 2003. B. Writing Group Workshops. Brian Barth, the 2002-2003 co-ordinator, explained the purpose of the writing group was to teach the writing skills from each of the disciplines that are not taught in class and necessary for publication. Brian was asked to be the co-ordinator for the group for the 2003-2004 year, which he accepted graciously. Brian gave a tentative start up for the writing group in October. C. Colloquia (2/term). It was suggested that instead of always having professors present relevant topics to anthropology that students give presentations half of the time, alternating with the professors. It was also suggested that instead of 1 student presentation at an 1 and 1/2 hours 2 or 3 students present for 20 -30 minutes in an informal setting. Possibly this could be taken away from the colloquia and student presentations be a completely separate event. This is to be tabled until the next Executive meeting. D. Lounge i. Decorating. If everyone could bring in personal pictures of field experiences and maps to decorate our sparse lounge it would be greatly appreciated. All pictures will be scanned and given back to the owner. Also if anyone knows of free comfy chairs and couches that can be donated to the cause please beg for the use for our group. ii. MASA computer, needs to be fixed, but can be used for rough drafts and e-mail. iii. Necessary knowledge. -we must clean up after ourselves, leaving no food in the garbage -the plants must stay in the room as a condition of our lounge privileges, and they must stay against the window -the door to the hall is to stay shut at all times and remain locked, access to the lounge to from the lab -we may only have the lounge for this year, so we must fight to keep it. One way may be to show that the room is needed and used... Say 'Hi' to Dr. Freer as you go by his office. E. Fundraising Ideas to help off set costs for all MASA members parties, food platters, conference costs, etc. -bake sale -increase in member dues also goes towards these same costs. V. Minutes of the last meeting were adopted as read. VI. Barb Hewitt adjourned the meeting at 17:25. |
