Bruce Lee:
Dragon by Linda Lee
Singled Out
Without a doubt, there have been
many Chinese victims who have been singled out and discriminated against and
one sufficient man, Bruce Lee was undoubtedly targeted against in the movie Dragon.
It showed how one man went up to the top and fought against his own in order to
be able to have freedom to teach whoever he wants. Bruce Lee was a man who had
skills and courage, and he was extremely determined about winning. Since he had
his wife and his friends, he was able to do anything, he was inspired.
Bruce Lee was a man who could teach
well, and was shown depicted as a man who was being disoriented. From part of
this movie, he was shown through a mask, and in his role, he was discriminated
by needing to wear a mask to hide his face. The producers all criticize him
when he’s away, talking about how he looks. And in the middle, he was looked
through as a Chinese man when the big white guys challenged him to a fight,
just because he was working out. They showed how he would take off his shoes
and socks thinking that this would be a sissy fight. And when he went out with
Linda, her mother disapproved because he was Chinese, she was only thinking
about how the baby would look like, “a yellow baby.” She had such racist
comments about him, and if I were in his shoes, I would feel like slapping her
because it isn’t right to criticize people on the way they look, act and there
background.
Cleary, the discrimination is shown
through two perspectives, Bruce Lee’s and Linda Lee’s. Bruce Lee was judged in
the film, and Linda could obviously see that, so in the movie theatre, she
could see how the movie was making the Japanese guy act, clumsy and idiotic.
And when they went on a date, the restaurant hostess didn’t get them their
table because it was a Chinese guy with a white girl, and that couldn’t happen.
Evidently, this movie shows the
plight of the racism happening between Chinese and whites. Whites and Chinese
couldn’t be together back then, but Linda and Bruce Lee made it possible. They
had an extremely tight relationship and didn’t let anything get in there way.
When Bruce had sustained being knocked out, and ended up in the hospital, Bruce
Lee yelled at Linda, but she came back the next day happy and didn’t care about
how he yelled at her, stating to you, that not all whites are cruel and dislike
Chinese being with whites.
Undoubtedly, Bruce was the target
with the whites and weren’t given his rights when he came up with the idea of
the movie with the white producer, instead he was taken out of his movie
because he was Chinese and was replaced by a white actor, this showed how
whites only wanted whites to be on show because Chinese were disoriented. He
was strange and weird to the whites because he did everything differently, like
taking off his shoes and socks before a fight like a sissy. The portrayal of
him acting like this definitely gives you a sense of how the whites all acted
towards Chinese and how some were actually nice.
There were many parts that made
Bruce hide his face, and in the movie, it shows Chinese washing and cooking in
restaurants which probably say that the only thing Chinese are good at s
cooking and washing dishes. I definitely think that the discrimination is towards
Bruce Lee and as well as other Chinese because it shows how they fight with one
another for silly reasons.
Apparently, Bruce Lee notices the
types of discrimination aimed towards him and fights because he don’t want to
be treated anything less than a person, so that’s why he changes some of the
scenes in the movie, to make it more interesting and to probably prove that
Chinese are more interesting than they think by covering up their face. I
definitely think that by covering up their face, it makes them more excited
into doing there things.
Overall, the types of discrimination
Bruce Lee is facing all deals with the fact that he’s a Chinese man in films
and that he married a white men. He was stunned that Linda hasn’t told her mom
about him, which made him probably think that she was ashamed about them. The
discrimination in this film was great and specifically targeted towards Bruce
Lee. You should be aware about how people treat different racial and colored
people with ignorance and singling them out.
