There were a number of difficulties I had to deal with when I decided to shoot infrared black and white film with an opaque lens. Paramount among those problems were exposure and focus. Since there is no exposure meter that accurately measures infrared intensity, exposure had to be determined by testing, and varied not only with the infrared reflectivity of each subject but also with time of day (daylight), and the quality of artificial lighting (incandescent lamps or flash). Indeed, what worked well one day often didn't work as well the next, under what appeared to be identical conditions.
But perseverance does bring its rewards, as in the case of the little doll here. Infrared caused the dark eyes of the small doll above to stand out in stark relief against her light face and lacy dress. I'd like to think this photograph shows the mystical and distinctly different, almost tactile quality of infrared.
