THE! Hong! Kong!
1236 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
Near Arrow St.
Words don't do this place justice. At least not OUR words. Click on the name/link at left to read other's words. And know, yeah and verily, that it was the scorpion bowl to be gotten in this den of iniquity that lieth at the root of this event. In the deeps of history.... many years ago..... when we were young.... and could go out..... and had fewer responsibilities...... soooo thiirrrstyyyy...... Oh, sorry. Continue.
NOT ON PART. GUIDE MAPS
Grafton Street
1230 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
Turn right when leaving Hong Kong - you're already there!
Restaurant with a bar. The opposite of the Hong Kong. It's in the place where Will Hunting said, "How do you like them apples". The Baskins Robbins/Bow and Arrow complex was here for those of you who remember the Bow and Arrow. A moment of silence as you pass, if you don't go in.
2
The Cellar (downstairs)
991 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
after Ellery St.
Bar. Wine. Snifters. Toddys. Tea. Dark beers. You get the idea. Quiet, when you're not there. When you are there, not quiet and it gets crowded because it's small.
3
The Cellar (upstairs) (wait! - that's an oxymoron, you moron!)
991 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
Also after Ellery St. (duh!)
Bar. Like the cellar of the Cellar, it's quiet when you're not there. Some actually drink wine here. When you are there, it's not quiet, and gets crowded because it's small. But bigger then the cellar of the Cellar. You decide.
4
Plough and Stars
912 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
On the corner of Hancock St.
Small, narrow, true-to-life pub/bar. Irish theme -- get a good Guinness, and then get out and make room for others -- it's small. Cover later on for music. You'll probably be there before the cover.
5
People's Republik
876 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
Across from Lee St.
Formerly known as Drumlins. Was and is a "Real Bar". However, now it also a Marxist/Soviet theme park. Lots of real dart games. So..... 1 pub crawl, 3 darts, 6 beers, and one Cold War era rotting Soviet missile. Let's see what we can make.
6
Cantab Lounge
738 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
After Pleasant St.
If you're the neighborhood type, "good bar; good music". Cover (all the time? Or just later on in night?). Usually are amenable to letting you in to get a beer without the cover if you explain to them that you are with a 300-500 person pub crawl and willbe leaving after the beer.
7
The Good Life
720 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
Next to Cantab Lounge - also after Pleasant St.
The Good Grief. Pseudo martini bar for people who don't really want a martini but feel cooler drinking one. Ask for the MassAveAThon Martini -- their cheapest draft somestic beer in a martini glass. At times, there are lines waiting to get in here?!?!?
8
The Field
20 Prospect St.
CAMBRIDGE
Go left a few doors off (the odd side) of Mass Ave.
Dark Irish themed pub. Hard to describe (interesting?) crowd -- all over the map. Pool tables last time we checked. Crowded, dark with complicated layout. Don't go in if you're already having balance issues. Otherwise, interesting exploring. It's dark. It's not well lit.
NOT ON PART. GUIDE MAPS
River Gods
125 River St
CAMBRIDGE
Go right a few doors off (the even side) of Mass Ave.
No info. Let us know what you find out!
9
Greek-American Political Club
288 Green St.
CAMBRIDGE
Turn right off Mass Ave. onto Magazine St., then a quick left on Green.
Closed, it seems. But go take a look anyways.
10
Charlie's Tap/Green St. Grill
280 Green St.
CAMBRIDGE
Same as above: Turn right off Mass Ave. onto Magazine St., then a quick left on Green.
Used to be a real bar. Now mostly oriented towards a nice little restaurant business. In fact, the "Tap" part of the name seems to have quietly disappeared since we were youths.
11
Phoenix Landing
512 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
After Magazine St.; before Brookline St.
Dance club masquerading under faux Irish theme. "20-something" club atmo. Cover later on in evening?
12
ManRay Night Club (aka Campus)
21 Brookline St.
CAMBRIDGE
Turn right one block off Mass Ave. to corner of Brookline and Green.
Lot of monochrome black wardrobes used here to project some sort of message. Unclear to us..... Cover. "The Art of Nightlife" or some such nonsense was their mantra in the past. Leave your Pats replica shirt at home if you want to check this place out. Some alternate lifestyle nights.
13
TT The Bear's Place
10 Brookline St.
CAMBRIDGE
Turn right one block off Mass Ave. onto Brookline.
Rock and roll bar. Cover. Been holding up their end of the deal in the Central Scare for years. If your runnin' out of gas early, consider stopping here. Some MassAveAThoners have been on the bill here before.
14
The Middle East (Downstairs)
472-480 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
Entrance for downstairs is right, off Mass Ave on Brookline.
Boston music club institution. Cover.
15
The Middle East (The Corner/Upstairs)
472-480 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
Entrance for upstairs is on the corner of Mass Ave and Brookline.
Restaurant setting with small bar (no cover) in front of club that requires cover. Get a mid-eastern snack and a window table for a great time watching the MassAveAThon go by. Then rejoin the march of the lemmings to the river.
16
Asgard
350 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
Corner of Sidney St.
Newer place (opened in 2001/early 2002). Confusing Viking/Norse name fronting an Irish themed restaurant/bar. Report back to us on this place if you go there.
NOT ON PART. GUIDE MAPS
Sidney's Grille
20 Sidney St.
CAMBRIDGE
follow Sidney St. on right side of Mass Ave. - look in lobby of hotel on left side of Sidney St.
Newer place (opened in 2001-2002 timeframe?) Hotel cocktail lounge and restaurant. You'll probably scare people if you go in here after your march through previous pubs. If you stop in, report back to us on it!
17
All Asia Cafe
334 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
Corner of Blanche St.
Quiet bar w/pan-Asian menu. Bar seems to have grown at expense of restaurant over the years. Our crowd is beginning to spread out a little by this point, so you can usually pull up a seat at the bar by the time you get here. Opened within last few years (2000-2001?).
18
Miracle of Science
321 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
Corner of State St.
Ahh, the Christener. Yesss, inddeeeeed. Place is more aptly named "Misfits of Science" - thx to Billy Yates for that one! Please stop here, just to help the people here be exposed to the greater range of experiences that lie just outside what they believe to be a safe little enclave.
19
Rhythm and Spice
315 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
After State; before(?) Village
Closed June 2002. Unfortunate. Cooooollll Caribbean atmosphere is now missing from the 'Thon.
20
Cuchi Cuchi
795 Main St.
CAMBRIDGE
This one is a little bit of a detour -- Go left off Mass Ave. onto State St., go one or two blocks then go left on Windsor, then go one block and go left on Main St. Look for it before Cherry St.; it's on the right side.
Coochie coochie coo says ZsaZsa and the belly dancers. At least they said it to us about 7 years back. We think. It was getting late. Bear with us. Vision problems probably masked hearing problems at that point.
21
Cambridgeport Saloon
300 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
Opposite Village St. If you are trying to get here after the Cuchi Cuchi detour - go left as you leave Cuchi on Main St., go right on Windsor, then right on State, then left on Village St. to Mass Ave.
Closest thing you'll see tonight to a Bucket-O-Blood-O-Rama fronted by mulletry. Yeeaaahh, baaaby. aka The Spittoon. Formerly a "Fathers n", where n=some Roman numeral that we've lost track of. (For those of you to whom "fathers" has meaning.)
22
Paradise
180 Massachusetts Ave.
CAMBRIDGE
Corner of Albany St.
Nooo, not the Paradise on Comm Ave. This one's a little different than that. Absolutely the last place to stop for a quick one before the bridge. Or, stop in to dance the night away.
23
Crossroads
495 Beacon St.
BOSTON
A few doors down on Beacon St., off right of Mass Ave.
aka Brodigan's; first pub over the bridge. You'll need sustenance after that long walk. If you took a cab, no drink for you! Big sprawling barrooms (yes, thats plural) on (at least) two levels. A few Irish icons on walls, but no real theme. MassAveAThoners are usually now beginning their roving hookup dances.
24
Last Drop
421 Marlborough St.
BOSTON
On corner of Mass Ave. and Marlborough. No sign; downstairs.
Basement bar; also formerly a "Fathers n", where n=some Roman numeral that we've lost track of. Sister pub to place in Oak Sq./Brighton, for those of you familiar with it.
25
Blue Cat Cafe
94 Massachusetts Ave.
BOSTON
After Marlborough; before Newbury St.
No info -- firsthand report needed.
26
Other Side Cafe
407 Newbury St.
BOSTON
Go right on Newbury; down a few doors.
Why, yes I'd love a sawgrass juice with my Budweiser. And free range coffee? Yeahhh, sounds good. And while you're at it, can I buy one of those neat stocking caps -- yeah, I know it's in the 60's outside, but I like how the hat looks.
27
TC Lounge
1 Haviland St.
BOSTON
Go right on Haviland; down a few doors.
No info - report back to us please.
28
Jillian's Billiard Club
145 Ipswich St.
BOSTON
If you get to TC Lounge, you'll need to go back up (north) on Mass Ave, then go left on Boylston; if you don't go to TC Lounge, then take right on Boylston off of Mass Ave. as you head south; go right on Ipswich St.; follow alongside Mass Pike; keep going, don't be scared; yes, you're going the right way. - you'll eventually see the red neon glow.
