“This is so
weird.” Jen smiled, bemused as she and Jack set the table for thanksgiving.
“Weird…as in…what
I’m thinking weird…or something else kind of weird?” Jack replied, warming his
hands on his sweater, as the cold air seemed to get colder, and the sun sank
lower, the creek now covered with shadow.
“Probably what
you’re thinking.” Jen said softly, running her hands through her shoulder
length blonde mane.
Jack finished up
and yawned, stretching his arms out.
“I am going to
make the most of this evening,” Jen said thoughtfully, tugging at her floral
sundress underneath her jacket.
“I mean…we all
promised we’d see each other, keep in touch every year. But one year turned to
two, two to five…”
“Five to seven.”
Jack finished, rolling his eyes.
“I know.” Jen
nodded, frowning. “I just kind of feel cut off from them…you know?”
He put a
comforting arm around Jen, and kissed her ear. “Well we’re all here…if just for
one night…” He said, shrugging.
“But I highly
doubt that. I can foresee drastic partying on Sunday night.”
“And judging from
the…ah…thousands of melodramas that occurred in High-school, we are bound> to
find something to talk about.” Jen snickered.
“And the wedding!”
Jack exclaimed. “The very reason they’re up here.”
“True.” Jen said,
nodding. “Plus there’s the uncanny irony of the happy couple, getting hitched.”
“And don’t forget
the, “So…how did you guys get back together anyway?” story.’ Jack added.
Jen groaned.
****
“Grams house is
just as I remember.” Andie said excitedly, tugging on Joey’s arm. Joey laughed.
They had been in each other’s company no longer then three hours, and already
Andie had latched herself onto Joey’s arm, refusing to let go.
Dawson and Pacey
followed behind, both deep in discussion. Joey raised an eyebrow, amused at
seeing this. The two of them had never really been the, ‘deep discussion’ type
of guys.
But things had
changed…they had all changed in one certain way or another. Looking down at
herself, Joey added wryly, and I suppose I’ve changed more physically then Jen
or Andie
The change was
very small, but prominent to her…and her fiancée, since they were the only two
to know. She felt herself start to smile broadly, and she placed a hand on her
flat stomach. Ducking under the little gateway covered in vines, the four of
them found themselves in an area which they felt should be familiar, but
wasn’t.
Two figures stood
a distance away, by a long table set out, and one of them turned to see the
four visitors. Striding towards them with a beaming smile, Jack held his arms
open as Joey fell into them, laughing with happiness, and Andie started to jump
up and down excitedly.
“Hey…” Jen hugged
Dawson fiercely, and he kissed her cheek. She pulled away and took a long, hard
look at him. Broader. His hair had darkened, and he had some stubble. It made
him look…scruffy, in a sexy kind of way. Very unlike Dawson, but Jen found herself
whistling under her breath. He wrapped his lean arms around Joey, protecting
her from the cold.
Joey then slipped
out of Dawson’s arms and pulled Jen in for a hug, as Jack and Dawson shook
hands. As Jen and Joey kissed cheeks, she caught a whiff of that lilies of the
Valley Perfume Joey wore in high school. It immediately brought her back to
intense study sessions, arguments and such. Joey had grown her hair so it was
halfway down her back, sleek and smooth and the same shade of brown it had
always been. She was wearing a heavy navy jacket, underneath a soft lilac
cotton dress. As usual… Beautiful style.
But she looked way
too thin, Jen thought disapprovingly. She always hated how Joey’d pass up on
seconds of desert, or didn’t eat lunch, for the sake of her figure…? Jen wasn’t
sure. Jen had always been envious of her, though…from her tall figure, to her
perfectly shaped breasts. She even envied her awkward stature, and the way
she’d do that sarcastic half smile. She let go of Joey’s hand, which on it was
her engagement ring, a gold band with a small array of diamonds. It was
beautiful.
“How’s my little
pumpkin?” Pacey was then cooing to Jen, and she swatted him away, giggling like
she did when she was sixteen.
“This is almost
sickening.” Joey laughed, rubbing her hands together for warmth, but when that
did not satisfy her, she opted for Dawson and his warm sweater instead.
“Like one of those
dreary Brady Bunch reunion specials.”
“Shit yeah.” Pacey
laughed, then he rubbed his stomach.
“I am so ready to eat.”
Jen found herself studying him too, and Jack who had noticed Jen’s almost
critical study on everyone nudged her.
Beefier. Ooh,
Pacey was a real…Jerry O’Connell type.
“Time to eat.”
Jack announced, pointing towards the table where several plates of food sat.
“I’ll go get everyone else.”
“I baked an apple
pie.” Jen said proudly.
“Grams baked the
rest.”
Grams was in the
kitchen, discussing cooking with Bodie and Bessie, while eight year old Alex
was swung around by Gale and Mitch. Dawson’s cousins and aunt and uncle were
also there, in the living room.
Almost most of
their relatives had come up for the wedding, while their friends they had met
in New York and various other places would be coming up later on in the week.
****
Jen smiled warmly,
loving the view in front of her as she served herself some pumpkin pie.
The two lovebirds,
Dawson and Joey, were in a world of their own at the table, sharing sweet
kisses and talking in low voices as Alex played loudly with his younger sister,
four year old Jenny. Pacey who had been dragged into the action-packed tag game
Alex had invented, finally convinced Andie to join him. Jack was deep in
conversation with Amanda, Dawson’s cousin who was highly interested in art.
Well, supposedly. Amanda seemed to be more interested in Jack’s biceps.
“Okay everybody!”
Mitch called.
“Park your asses!”
Brad, Dawson’s eighteen-year-old
cousin slumped over, making sure he had a seat next to Jen.
“He likes older
women.” Pacey teased Jen. Jen smirked. “Like Pacey, like….um…Dawson’s cousin.”
He pinched her nose.
Eventually
everyone was seated. “Okay…what are we thankful for?” Grams said, smiling
kindly at everyone. She was much older now in skin, but as for her personality
she was the woman she had been several years ago…strong, wise and loving.
Everyone reached for hands, thinking.
“Food.” Alex said
loudly and they all tittered.
“Women.” Brad and
Pacey said at the same time. Jen was tempted to add, ‘Older.’ but decided
against it. Reminiscing would have to come later.
“Friends.” Jen
said decidedly, and Grams smiled at the first no-nonsense answer.
“Lovers…” Joey
said, rolling her eyes and smirking a little, emitting laughs from around the
table.
Dawson stroked her
hand sensually behind her back.
Grams said a
silent prayer.
****
“I’d like now to
do something cheesy and…well, cheesy.” Pacey announced an hour and a half
later. It was dark and the table was lit up with candles and nearly empty
bottles.
He stood up,
teetering a little and Jen had to grab his butt to steady him, giggling.
Raising his glass of wine, he bowed towards Dawson and Joey, and both of them
raised their eyebrows in mock suspiciousness.
“I’d like to make
a half-drunken toast to the happy, engaged and over-sexed couple.” Everyone
burst into laughter, except Grams who held her hand to her heart.
“I wish them…all
the happiness they’ve barely had.” Jen applauded, as did everyone else, still
laughing lightly.
“Thank you Pacey.”
Dawson said dryly, raising his glass, clinking it with Pacey’s. Joey leaned
over and kissed Dawson’s cheek.
“Aww.” Andie
sighed, pretending to tear up. When Jen looked again she swore that perhaps
Andie was.
****
“It kind of
sparkles like Joey’s rock.” Pacey said softly, pointing towards a numerous
array of stars.
Jen took a drag
from her joint and nodded. The two of them were lying on the grass, staring up
at the sky much later on.
Joey and Dawson
were sitting on an upturned boat, Joey cuddled up in his lap. Jack lay next to
them, and Andie lay, drowsy, on the grass.
“Hey…is that
something…is that meant to be mean?” Joey asked, sounding unlike herself.
“Yes.” Jen
answered slowly.
“Oh guys…” Jack
groaned.
“You gotta lay off
the stuff. I mean, we’re twenty seven.”
“All the more
reason.” Pacey exclaimed. Jen patted his cheek.
“Calm down, Pace.”
“I feel like being
wild.” Pacey suddenly said excitedly.
“I mean, we’re in
our prime!”
He jumped up. “I
know you know I already have a wild night planned before the wedding, Dawson,
but don’t you think all six of us…including the females should have a
little…fun?”
“You mean the
three D’s?” Jen asked.
“What are they?”
Joey asked.
“Drinking…drugs…dancing.”
Jen replied.
Everyone groaned,
especially Andie.
“No…too…tired.”
She moaned.
“How about a
little…dip?” Pacey said, grinning almost wickedly.
“Dip?” Dawson
asked; awakened from his stupor of being stoned and wound in Joey's arms.
“Like as in,
water…creek…”
“We’ll freeze our
asses off!” Jen exclaimed indignantly.
“You have the
craziest ideas.”
“Duh.” Pacey
replied. “That makes it all the more daring…come ON! If I’m game…”
“I’m game.” Jen
interrupted, crossing her arms.
“Pacey you just
don’t know what creatures live at the bottom of the creek.” Joey sighed.
“Hey Jo, I haven’t
been living here for…um…sixteen years without knowing something.” He warbled.
Silence.
Then Joey spoke up
quietly, “Um…that didn’t make sense.”
Then without
warning, Jen started to laugh. Jack joined in, and soon they were all laughing.
Pacey tore off his shirt, and flexed his muscles.
“Come on my lovely
ladies.” He crowed, helping Jen and Andie up. Joey Jack and Dawson dragged
themselves off the boat.
Pacey waded in
first. “Whoa!” he exclaimed. “This is…not as cold as expected.” He turned and a
slow smile spread across his face. Then, in front of them all he whipped off
his boxers and threw them on the bank, leaving himself butt naked.
“Argggggggh!! I'm
blind!! Pacey blinded me!!" Joey screamed, as Jen and Andie shrieked with
laughter.
Jack covered his
eyes and started to join in on the laughter, while Dawson quickly helped Joey
settle herself. Dawson laughed incredulously and shook his head in disbelief.
"Pacey," he half-heartedly reprimanded, while suppressing his
amusement at his best friends' antics.
Pacey just waded
in deeper, then standing knee high in water, shrugged and dove in. All common
sense abandoned as he emerged, sputtering and laughing like a maniac.
“Join me!” he
yelled.
Without
hesitation, Jen started to strip, and Andie joined her.
Wading into the
creek there was more shrieks at how cold it was. Andie had left her bra and
underwear on, while Jen just left her underwear on, and floated ‘freely.’
Around in the creek.
Soon, Dawson Jack
and Joey joined them, as Pacey started to walk in some shallow bits, declaring
he was, ‘going for a walk.’
“Stop it!” Joey
shrieked loudly, as Dawson and Jack pelted her with water. The two guys were
slightly more modestly dressed then Pacey, but Joey had only her underwear on
though In the back of her mind she wondered if perhaps she should start wearing
bras. Her breasts were now kind of sore.
But Dawson loved
how hard they got in the water, hence he snuggled up to her, and she pressed
herself against him as they followed Pacey, Jack following with his camera in
tow. Laughing, he snapped a few pictures. He couldn’t wait to show them the
gang when they were all sober.
Later on, while
drifting on their backs and sipping beers at around 2:00am, Joey decided to
break the news. “Guys—you’d be happy to know Dawson and I actually did finally
have sex, proof of this is the fact I’m now two months pregnant.” Their
friends’ reactions were each different but nonetheless the same, in the way
that they were all excited, pleased and most of all surprised. They also all
wanted input into the futures of the unborn child, and by the time 4:00am
rolled around names, star signs, colleges and even spouses had been suggested.
****
“And don’t even think
about venturing back till midnight!” Jen called after the two guys who had been
pushed out of the house in preparation for a surprise bridal shower for Joey,
who was innocently grocery shopping that very moment.
“Okay…” Jen turned
around and accepted a glass of champagne from Julia, who had been Joey’s
roommate at College.
“I’ll give the
signal, and when she opens the door I’ll flick on the light…or she will… and
you all yell surprise, you know, standardized surprise party thing.”
The women guests, ten
of them, friends and co-workers all nodded eagerly. Jen heard a car door slam
and she jumped. “She’s here!”
She flipped off
the light and hid behind the door. A few moments later, Joey swung open the
door, two bags in her hand.
“Jesus.” She
muttered, squinting. She edged over to the sidewall and turned the light on
with her elbow.
“SURPRISE!” the
women all yelled, jumping up.
“Shit!” Joey
shrieked, dropping the bags.
****
Jen grinned slyly
and all them watched in anticipation as Joey opened the third present that
evening. She had been giggling non-stop, shocked and amazed at the gifts of
elaborate lingerie and perfumed body cream.
“To get you in the
mood if you know what I mean.” Jen laughed wickedly as Joey uncovered yet
another piece of lingerie, see-through lacy, tiny bits of frou-frou, obviously
French, and she wasn’t sure which was the top and which was the bottom because
there was a hole…oh…she blushed. “Jen! Thank you…” she hugged her, her cheeks
red.
“Your honeymoon is
going to be very romantic…” Andie gushed, passing her another parcel.
Joey laughed and
said, “I don’t know what to wear out of all of this…”
“Well, you must
wear the traditional something blue…” Jen started. She then clapped her hands.
“Can we see your dress?”
“Ooh yes!”
“Okay!” Joey led
them all upstairs to her room, and inside, to where the dress was being held elegantly
on a body rack, covered in plastic. “It’s Calvin Klein.” Joey said excitedly.
The dress was
strapless creamy white silk, classic Klein. She showed them her shoes, which
were silver beaded stilettos, and the headdress of flowers. After much
consideration they all agreed she should wear the white silky strapless bra and
silk panties underneath it.
“Better to be
simple at first.” Jen advised her. “And comfortable. And easy to take off…” the
girls all laughed and made similar comments. For the first night of their
honeymoon they would be staying at a hotel. Then the next day they were heading
off to Turtle Island.
“Okay, since this
is your second last night as a single woman I recommend we go bar hopping.” Jen
said saucily, an idea already formed in her head.
****
“Duuuuuudes!” a
voice bellowed out. Pacey and Dawson turned their faces slightly to see about
four guys in the doorway to the bar, the guy in the front obviously happy to
seem them both.
“Oh—hey Derek…Jack!”
Dawson greeted his college roommate and Jack, and a handful of other men who
had seemed to have coincidentally turned up at the same bar.
‘Coincidentally.’
Was perhaps not the right word when he saw Jack’s devilish grin.
“A little birdie
told me we might get some of the gals from Joey’s party to join ours.” Derek
said enthusiastically, rubbing his hands together.
“Oh man that Jen
is so hot!” Julian interrupted, having had met her once.
Pacey’s ears
perked up.
“Why would they
join us sore losers?” Dawson commented.
Jack just grinned
evilly, something he was just repeatedly doing.
“Oh…you know….”
Then from behind
his back he brought out an envelope.
“Photos. For all
to see.” He said cheerily. *****
“Oh god….” Dawson
said, putting his head in his hands. “Put the photos away! If I see Pacey’s ass
one more time….”
“No, no! Keep
going! This is better then Playboy!” Derek said, holding up a particular photo
high in the air.
“Wow—your fiancée
has nice tits.”
Dawson snatched it
away from him.
“Jack, how did you
find us anyway?” Pacey asked, ordering another drink, and laughing loudly as
yet another photo appeared.
“I mean, the, “ he
made commas with his fingers, “Stag Night.’ Isn’t until Friday…”
The guys looked
ate ach other, grinning.
“Exactly. We
decided that tonight would be the ‘mixed’ night, when both women and men
combine drunken foolishness.”
“Wait…don’t we
already do that?” Dawson laughed.
“Women? But…Jo’s
off with all her friends.” Pacey pointed out.
“Correction. Jo
was off with all her friends but has just walked in…friends in tact.” Jack
said. Pacey and Dawson whirled around to see Jen and Joey, sharing a joke,
their heads close together. About 5 other girls followed, four of them Joey’s
college friends, one a work friend.
“Alright!” Derek
said under his breath, clapping Dawson on the back. “Is the brunette who I
think it is? God, she’s beautiful. How on earth did you get her to say yes to
you?”
“How could she
have resisted me?” Dawson chuckled.
“Riiight.” Derek
said, but he was busy checking out Jen.
“Who’s that?”
“Jen Lindley.”
Dawson said, standing up and grinning as Joey rushed towards him and flung her
arms around him. They kissed, and Pacey and Derek chuckled.
Jen followed, her
arms slung around Julia, Sara and Andie.
“Hey stranger.”
She drawled, tweaking Dawson’s chin. “Guys, save it for later.” She teased
Dawson and Joey who ignored her and continued to kiss. She then pushed past
Derek and Pacey and leaned over the bar, catching the barman’s attention with
her cleavage.
“Five
screwdrivers.” She said flirtily, flipping her hair over her shoulder.
“I’ll just have a
diet coke.” Joey called out, nuzzling noses with Dawson and he tightened his
grip around her.
“Oh, oops, yeah,
four.” Jen corrected her order. “Don’t want to get the baby drunk. Not yet,
anyway.”
Once the girls all
had their drinks and everyone began to feel a little more comfortable around
each other, Jen suggested a game of Pool.
“Oh, I’ll play.”
Derek said mischievously, his eyes following Jen around the room.
Pacey narrowed his
eyes at Derek. “You planning to hit on her?” He asked. Derek looked back at him
and after a pause, shrugged.
“Why not? I heard
that weddings were the best place to meet girls, and, well, this is sort of
like one.”
****
“You do realize
the wedding is on Saturday.” Jen told Pacey, as they bought popcorn at the
movie snack bar before going to see a movie the next day.
“Duh.” Pacey said,
rolling his eyes.
“It’s Thursday—two
days to go. I can hardly believe it.” Jen sighed, tucking a strand of hair
behind her ear.
“I mean—I never
thought those two could last longer then six months.” Jen said, smiling and
flickering an eyebrow.
“Hmmmm.” Pacey
replied in a bored tone.
“I cannot wait.”
Jen sighed.
“Oh and at the
beach…It’s going to be so romantic.”
Pacey raised an
eyebrow as he paid the girl behind the counter.
“Hit me or kiss
me, but I don’t think I’ve heard, ‘romantic.’ Come out of your lips yet.”
“Yeah.” Jen said,
cocking her head to one side and smiling.
“It’s like first
time sex…new, exciting, it hurts but it can be nice.” Jen smirked and tugged
him along to where Dawson and Joey were standing, Joey giggling at something he
was saying.
“Come on my fellow
friends.” Pacey said, Jen laughing as he pretended to force them apart by
stepping in between them.
“There’s plenty of
time for lurve on your wedding night.”
“Shut up Pacey.”
Joey exclaimed as Dawson said, “That’s for sure.”
****
It was eight o
clock and everyone was quite relaxed as they sat around the table the next
evening which was Thursday, chattering and drinking from the large amount of
wine left over from the actual engagement party in New York, which Jen and Jack
hadn’t been able to attend.
The room was in
semi-darkness, candles glowing on the table cast out a very relaxing effect.
Andie Jen and Dawson were chattering up a storm about old faces they had seen
and bumped into that week, and then Andie and Jen described their ‘bridesmaid’
dresses to an enthralled Dawson.
“Really simple,
strappy summer dressy-type thingies.” Jen said, pouring herself and Andie a
glass of Chardonnay.
“Mine’s this gorgeous
pale blue rayon? I think? Material with no sleeves, it’s a boobtube type top
and…”
“She looks
beautiful in it.” Andie finished off, holding a hand to her heart mockingly.
“Hmm.” Dawson
replied, nodding, and he picked up a bottle of red, inspecting the label.
“The weird thing
is I can’t wear a bra underneath it, not even a strapless one. But it doesn’t
look bad, in fact my boobs hold it up.” Jen said briskly, indicating how with
her hands. “Same goes with Joey’s, except her breasts are slightly smaller…I
always thought she wore a Wonderbra or something, just never got up the nerve
to ask. You’d know, does she?”
Dawson nearly
dropped the bottle and Jen and Andie exploded into giggles.
On the other side
of the table, Jack Joey and Pacey were discussing the trials and tribulations
of their jobs.
“My secretary is a
stupid bitch.” Joey said crossly. “She’s malicious, mean, wears the worst
clothes and always flirts with Dawson whenever he comes to the office…. or any
male who comes to my office. She literally sits on the desk with those legs
apart. She glares at me for no reason and I can’t do a thing about it because
she’s the boss’s daughter!”
Jack chuckled.
“From what I can tell, perhaps she’s jealous of you?”
“Probably.” Joey
said airily. “But then who cares? She’ll never get anywhere—honestly, she’s an
untalented ho.”
Joey worked as
deputy editor of In Style magazine. Not the best job according to her, but
pretty okay for a someone in their late twenties. She was always moving around,
from Newspaper to Newspaper and now magazines. She considered perhaps later
writing books but what she really wanted to be was a journalist for a big-shot
newspaper. If things went well that possibility might become a reality.
“I wouldn’t mind
having a pretty secretary to wait on me day and night.” Pacey said laughingly,
blowing on his nails. “But my tiresome stints are followed closely by just an
old fart in green jeans.”
Jack and Joey
laughed, knowing he meant his agent Tommy who was really a good guy, just…. gay,
though he had a partner so Pacey had never worried about Tommy hitting on him
or anything. His female co-stars in the acting world seemed to do that a lot,
though, not that Pacey minded at all.
Jack himself was a
caterer, and luckily quite a successful one at that. And he had eagerly offered
to do the wedding to which Joey and Dawson had happily accepted.
“Well it’s
different for me.” Joey replied. “I always thought all those blonde secretary’s
in movies and TV shows were all cliché’s and shit but I guess it all happens in
real life, too.”
“Does Dawson have
a beautiful girl to wait on him day and night, other then you of course….”
Pacey sniggered. “Har-har.” Joey said slowly, rolling her eyes and clicking her
fingers at Jen, indicating ‘Please pass the Water!’
“Yeah, he does
have an ‘assistant,’ but she’s harmless.” Joey smirked.
“Don’t think he’ll
crack onto her ever, while I’m around.”
Jack and Pacey
could definitely believe that…. as well as being beautiful, Joey was strong
willed, kind, warm-hearted and Dawson had struggled for too long to finally
‘get’ her, then to just throw it all away for a fling. And he wasn’t the guy to
do that, either.
****
Joey stepped out
of the shower and toweling off, reached for her bathrobe. She pulled it on and
picked up her comb, combing out her damp unruly hair and inspecting her face in
the mirror. Red, glowing cheeks which was surprising since all that morning she
had felt quite ill. It was now ten, and Dawson was in the bedroom, fussing
about and getting dressed. Joey smiled to herself. He had looked so handsome
with his wet hair, newly brushed teeth and only a towel draped around his body,
which was amazingly toned and structured thanks to all the exercise he liked to
do now. If she hadn’t have been feeling so ill-weathered and tired she would
have whipped the towel off and given his old bed a test run to see if it needed
replacing.
“I feel much
better now.” She mused, taking in her appearance. Not bad…. she looked kind of
sexy in a clean, fresh natural way.
Striding out of
the bathroom, she walked into the bedroom and shut the door firmly behind her.
“Hey,” Dawson said from the bed where he was sitting on the edge, about to put
a shirt on.
“Hi.” She said
cheerily, bounding over to him. She climbed into his lap and straddled him, enabling
him to put his shirt on.
“You feeling
better now?” he murmured into her ear, letting her discard his shirt to the
floor and climb further into his lap, her hair brushing over his face deliciously.
“Hm-hm.” She
replied, leaning her shoulders back so he could slip her dressing gown off with
more ease.
She immediately
reached into his pants and he laughed throatily, her dressing gown slipping
down to her waist to expose her breasts and shoulders. Dawson nuzzled her neck,
inhaling the sweet smell of soap and body lotion and was glad she wanted to
make love. Joey usually liked making love in the mornings, she claimed it was
the best way to wake up and face the day, why need caffeine otherwise?
The first thing he
had felt like doing was just that this morning, but she wasn’t up to it, so
tired she could barely lift a finger. She could certainly lift a finger now,
and she placed both hands on his chest, gently forcing him down onto his back.
A few moments
later they lay wrapped together, his hand cupping her breast in the palm of his
hand. Finally getting her breath back, Joey spoke. “Remember the first time we
did it? In New York last year?”
“Hmmm.” He
murmured, kissing her neck. “I think I distinctly remember you saying….’That
was the best fuck I’ve ever had in my life!’”
Joey giggled and
turned around to face him, pressing her body into his. “I was on a perpetual
high.”
“So you were
lying?”
“No.” Joey said,
laying moist, soft kisses on his jaw.
“If I was lying
would I have insisted we do it again?”
“And again…and
again….” Dawson chuckled at the memory. “I couldn’t look my roommate in the eye
for a whole month when I realized he was home about the same time we were
damaging the mattress.”
“Scott is coming
up Saturday, right?” Joey laughed, playing with his fingers as she, too,
remembered the embarrassment Dawson had suffered every time they walked into
the kitchen the next morning, to see Scott grinning like the Chesire Cat. “Have
a good night?” he’d ask slyly.
Dawson remembered
that once, the night after he had proposed they had been lying in bed together,
in the similar pose they were in now. And he had started to think about their
future. He had wondered idly what it’d be like to spend many, many more
evenings like that. He had liked that idea. Oh yeah, he was definitely ready.
Of all the
girlfriends he had had, Joey was the one he had loved the most. He didn’t think
he needed a reason—he just felt that way. He loved her almost too much, and
that scared him. What if something happened to her? But he pushed those
thoughts away. He was, indefinitely, in love. And the way she had opened her
eyes and smiled lustily at him, he was sure she was as well. It wasn’t just the
sex. Or the kisses. Or the talks. Or the way they had so much fun together. It
was also the way they knew each other. Almost too well.
Dawson then nodded
to Joey’s question. “Yep. He called me last week.”
“Good.” Joey then
sighed.
“Speaking of,
well, moving,” Joey said reluctantly. “I have to go and do the whole beauty
thing with Jen and Andie in like twenty minutes.” She moaned and got up,
Dawson’s hand still on her breast.
“I might not see
you until tomorrow…..I’m gonna be busy, you’re gonna be busy and it’s bad luck
to see me before the wedding.” She teased him, slowly slipping out of his grip
and selecting a pile of clothes to put on.
“Dawson! DAWSON!
You here?” they could hear Pacey hollering from downstairs.
“Jeez—I’m not even
dressed yet.” Dawson grumbled, hastily starting to redress.
“Yeah, coming!” he
called back, shoving open the door.
Joey applied some
lipstick, then grabbed her bag, “Okay honey, I’m leaving.” She said softly, as
Dawson wrestled with his trouser zip. He abandoned it and quickly picked Joey
up and kissed her sweetly.
“See….” He kissed
her again. “You tomorrow….”
“I love you.” Joey
said lightly, smiling into his mouth. “Can you believe?”
“Hmmm yeah.” He
replied teasingly, caressing her neck.
“Okay, Dawson,
sorry to---whoa.” Pacey stopped in his tracks when he saw Dawson and Joey
standing closely together, his fly undone, their mouths pressed intimately
together as they talked quietly.
“You two were…um… weren’t
you? Whoa, sorry guys—“ Pacey said sheepishly, looking the other way. He was
holding two dresses on hangers, Jen and Andie’s bridesmaid outfits.
“No, actually we
had just finished.” Joey smirked, untangling herself from Dawson, then she flew
out the door, blowing a kiss.
Dawson chuckled, a
bit embarrassed.
“So.” Pacey said,
rubbing his hands together. “Jack’s coming over in a few to prepare—today might
be interesting.”
He then blinked.
“It’s your last day as a single man, too.” He placed the dresses on the bed and
pulled a plastic bag out of his pocket. “For tonight.” He grinned.
“Don’t do any
now.” Dawson said, running a hand through his hair.
“Nah, couldn’t be
bothered. And don’t expect running on train tracks or spray painting the local high
school, I think it’s going to be pretty tame…strip joint, maybe…”
Two hours later….
“Okay. I’m going
to interview you, then Pacey, then everyone else.” Dawson said slowly, backing
up with his camera, the view on Jack as he prepared the catering in the
kitchen.
“Dawson, I’m not
photogenic.” Jack complained.
“Pacey is, though.
Go film him.” There was a crash from upstairs, and Dawson caught a whiff of
something familiar.
“I think I’ll go
investigate what he’s up too.” Dawson said thoughtfully. Jack put down his
knife and followed Dawson up the stairs.
“Oh…my…god…” Jack
laughed, as they rounded the corner, and Dawson jumped back, his video camera
nearly dropping.
Pacey grinned and
flickered his eyebrow as he strolled towards them, decked out in Jen’s
bridesmaid dress, heels and Joey’s flower headdress.
“I am a natural.”
He drawled, stretching one muscular leg out.
“Pacey! I told you
not to smoke any weed!” Dawson exclaimed. Despite his shock he continued to
film a grinning Pacey strutting around.
“If Jen finds out
what you’re doing, she’ll KILL you!” Dawson continued, watching as Pacey
applied lipstick.
Jack wad doubled
over in the corner, laughing uproariously.
“Do you find me
attractive, Jack?” Pacey said in a high-pitched voice.
Dawson started to
laugh as well. “I think---I think I will be going. Now.” Jack choked out. “And
I think you should take heed to Dawson’s words of advice. Jen WILL kill you if
she sees you in her dress!”

“Aren’t you a
little nervous that they might go overboard with the having fun thing tonight?”
Jen asked Joey curiously as a beautician worked furiously on her nails.
“I think I gave it
good to Dawson this morning to last him at least till tomorrow.” Joey said
airily. “He’s not going to succumb to some stripper’s slutty charms anytime
soon—knowing Pacey that’s probably what they’ll do, too.”
Jen screeched with
laughter. “You’re too much.”
“So, what’s on the
agenda for us tonight?” Andie asked as she flipped through a magazine. “It’s
just gonna be us three—the rest of the girls are going to a nightclub or
something, tourist-hopping and I think it’s best we don’t join them.”
“I agree.” Joey
said, nodding. “The last thing I want is to wake up with a hangover, and
looking like absolute shit.”
“It says here,
that ‘the bride should always have a long bath and participate in some
aromatherapy’.” Andie read from the Cosmopolitan Brides special.
“What if she’s
pregnant?” Joey spoke up, giggling a little.
“I still can’t
believe you are.” Andie gushed.
“Have you decided when
you’ll announce it to everyone else?” Jen asked.
“Certainly not at
the wedding!” Joey laughed. “I think when I’m a bit more pregnant, like four
months. When it’s---you know, certain that I’m actually having a baby.”
“Always the safe
idea.” Jen agreed. “I say after this we go and catch a movie. I heard Summer
Sisters was pretty good.” Andie suggested.
“Or maybe that
French film. Then afterwards we can go and grab some lunch.” “Oooh, yes, sounds
good.” Joey said excitedly, beaming.
****
“Ugh, can you
bring me my perfume? It needs time to spread!” Joey called to Jen. Jen came
scurrying in, holding a large bottle of Ck one. “What’s this?” Joey asked,
fingering the bottle.
“I can’t find
yours. This is mine.”
“But—Dawson likes
mine better.” Joey said worriedly. “He loves the Donna Karan one.”
“I don’t think
he’ll care, Jo.” Jen said hurriedly, squirting the bottle onto Joey’s neck.
Joey’s cool, calm
and in-check composure had diminished about ten minutes ago, as she scurried
around in her underwear, sighing, staring out windows, playing with her hair,
picking up photo albums and rifling through them.
”I’m sooo
nervous.” Joey admitted to Jen, as Jen helped her into the simple, white slip
gown, and zipped up the side.
“You look
beautiful. Like a Calvin Klein model.” Jen reassured her, fitting the bodice
over Joey’s chest.
“It’s not just
that.” Joey said, but she looked at herself in the mirror, wondering if it was
true.
Her hair was
delicately curled and hung around her shoulders; a simple flower headdress made
up of white and yellow flowers was placed on her head. Her makeup was simple,
but accentuated her features. She had to agree, she did look pretty good. She
felt herself relax some.
“Long time commitment
is scary!” Jen agreed, laughing. She hugged Joey. “It’s ok, honey. We’re all
here for you. Now it’s time to have some fun, okay?”
Joey nodded.
“Yes.” Gale knocked on the door. ”Joey! I have your sandwich! Your not going
without eating, honey!” she barged in, and stopped.
“Oh, Joey.” She
gasped.
“You look
fantastic!” she handed Joey the sandwich and a card, then beckoned the
photographer in, who snapped a picture of Jen and Joey, Joey and Gale and then
Joey reading the card, which was from her fiancée. ****
The ceremony was
beautiful. It was casual, yet romantic, and short. Dawson couldn’t believe how
amazing his wife looked, and he couldn’t take his hands off her. Photos were
then taken, and the guests sprawled about the beach, drinking champagne and
talking amongst themselves.
“Okay I think you
two should kiss.’ Jen advised the happy couple. “What? Oh no, that’s so
cheesy…” Joey started to say but she was broken off by Dawson kissing her.
Jen grinned as the
photographer captured it. Later on they all agreed that was the best photo, the
ocean in the background, the surprised smile on her face, Jen’s laughing eyes
as she watched.
Lunch was
definitely fun, and there was dancing and live music by the spectacular pool,
which was the stunning aspect of the resort everyone loved. At midnight, whilst
everyone was still partying, the twosome snuck away and spent a memorable
evening at the hotel.
Packing the next
day was sad for Jen, who had thoroughly enjoyed the past week. She vowed if she
ever got married she’d have her wedding here, too. Jen, Andie, Pacey, and a few
other people saw the couple off and Jen knew by the sparkling eyes, secret
smiles and satisfied expressions on their faces that the night had
gone…smoothly. Hopefully their marriage would, too. But then who knew?
