2002 STATE CONVENTION @ UMass Amherst

MassJCL's first two-day convention began on May 10th with the convention theme "Magnos homines virtute metimur, non fortuna" - We measure great men by their virtue not their fortune. The convention officially began at 3:00 pm and all of the delegates were busy doing something. Some were registering art work, in Olympika events, and spirit games. Others were settling in their big hotel rooms and getting ready for the general assembly.


The first general assembly began with the call to order by MJCL President Zara-Marie Spooner. The opening remarks were given by Amanda Marcellino, 2001-2002 NJCL 2nd Vice President. Afterwards, Irina Feldman, 2001-2002 MJCL 1st Vice President led the everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance in Latin (of course). Then Nina Huynh, 2001-2002 MJCL Secretary read the JCL Creed, followed by the JCL Song sung by all the officers. Then we were welcomed by the director of UMass Amherst and the chair of the Classics department. Zara-Marie introduced the 2001-2002 MassJCL Executive Board and the SCL Executive Board were introduced by their President and Vice President. Zara then introduced former MJCL and NJCL Officers and Irina gave the spirit orientation. Than Parliamentarian Jeffrey Hyland announced the candidates for office. After the candidates' speeches, MJCL State Chair, Marjorie Keeley announced the convention rules and regulations. Finally, Rosaline Valcimond, 1997-1998 NJCL Secretary gave the closing remarks and the assembly was adjourned.


Then everyone stayed in their seats to take the academic tests that they choose ahead of time. Then everyone proceeded on his or her own way and had dinner. Then everyone had a choice of going to the dance entitled "Drops of Jupiter". During part of the dance was the Candidates Open Forum, an event at the Nationals Convention. At the Open Forum, the candidates are asked questions upon what they plan to do and are asked questions from the voting delegates. After the dance, all of the delegates were to report to thr room their school was assigned to for Chapter Fellowship, an event that occurs at Nationals. At this Fellowship, the schools are to determine which candidates they wish to vote for. Then it was the call to floors and lights were to be put out.


On Saturday morning, the 2nd general assembly began with the call to order by Zara and opening remarks were given by Tiffany Caufield, 2001-2002 Mass SCL Secretary. Then Viet Luong, MassJCL Technical Coordinator led everyone in the pledge of allegiance and Alexandra Saridis read the JCL Creed, followed by the JCL Song sung by all the officers. Afterwards, Nina Huynh led the roll call and the officer reports and voting took place. Then Hang Do, 2000-2001 NJCL Historian gave the closing remarks and the assembly was adjourned.


Then the delegates went on their ways. Some participated in creative contests, spirit games, Olympika, and art viewing. In the afternoon, the chariot race, certamen, and oral academics took place. In the Competive Certamen Finals, three teams of each level competed against each other. These three teams were determined earlier at the Certamen Preliminaries in March at Quabbin HS. After a set of 20 questions with two bonuses each, the winners of each level were announced Finally, the winners of each level were known and they are . . .

Then it was the Toga Parade, which determined the spirit contest.


It was finally the time for the closing assembly. Ribbons were distributed to winners in various contests. The top achievement awards were also announced. The newly elected officers were announced. They are . . .
