Designers Notes: As always underweight. Engine mass was calculated for 5/8
rather than 3/5, making the engines heavier than they technically would be by
the rules, but given this is an old ship, I don't mind too much. The KF drive
was also calculated at much larger than it was supposed to be. The end result
makes for a very nice old destroyer I think. I actually like this little old
lady.

Overview:

The Lola I class destroyers were the oldest ships to serve in the star league
navy. The first came into commision with the Hegemony Armed Forces in the
year 2345 and the last wasn't taken off the line until 2605. All during this
time the Lola I served as a reliable picket ship and escort, ultimately done
in by their age more than their combat ability.

The Lola I was at the time of its launching one of the fastest and best armed
destroyers in existance. It was also one of the first ships to utilize
warship grade lasers, an addition that proved to be troublesome in this ship
at first. The early model naval lasers were massive affairs, their sheer size
limiting them to a very narrow range of fire. Though modifications on all the
Lolas in service when newer lasers became available corrected this problem,
the laser batteries are still somewhat limited in their firing arcs. This was
one of the reasons that the Hegemony designers included so many launching
hardpoints for the early Redtail missile system (These were later switched to
white sharks when those became available).

Central to the Lola I's firepower however, are the twelve PWB Naval
Autocannons. These guns were the best available at the time. Though they
lacked the raw power of the cannons used on later ships such as the Monsoon
and Aegis, they were some of the most reliable weapons in the galaxy at the
time.

Though considered barely mediocre by modern standards, the Lola I's armor was
more than adequate for the oponents of her day. Likewise later work done
during the amaris coup proved that the Lola I was well suited to upgrades to
newer types of armor plate.

Though the last Lola I was removed from service in 2605, this would not be
the end for the old destroyers. During the Amaris Coup a brilliant young
engineer hit upon the idea of reactivating old Lola I class destroyers and
refitting them for service. Amazingly relatively simple field modifications
allowed for a tremendous boost in engine power, and the ships proved easily
refitted with newer heavier armor. These craft were employed quite
effectively alongside Kimagure and Sovremenyy class cruisers as fast attack
ships, though almost all of them were destroyed in the long march to Terra.

There were as many as a hundred Lola Is still in mothballs or in house fleets
when the succession wars broke out. The vast majority of these were confirmed
destroyed, though exact records are not available and there are still at
least a dozen ships unaccounted for. As with other old warships it is
entirely possible that ships of this type have survived hidden away
somewhere.

Relatively recently there were rumors that someone might have found at least
some of these ships. In the year 3025 Sal Brennerman, A business tycoon from
the Federated Suns world of June, began sending quiet feelers among lostech
prospectors for any information they could deliver about the modified Lola Is
used by General Kerensky. Reportedly he also told friends that they could
expect "a sixth successor state rising up in the outback under my control"
within the next ten years. Though most attribute his comments to his typical
excentricities, nobody will truly ever know what he might have found. He died
of a suprise heart attack shortly after he began looking for information on
the old warships. Though a number of lostech prospectors have been drawn to
that region of space because of Sal Brennerman and his somewhat unexpected
demise, nobody has ever found anything.
