Yamcha the coward?
Another common misconception is that Yamcha is nothing but a big coward. That is also not true. During the entire series of Dragonball, Yamcha was one of the most confident fighters around. He never backed down from a fight, even when the odds were against him. If you watch Dragonball, you will not find a hint of Yamcha being a coward; in fact, you will find quite the opposite. During the Saiyan Saga in DBZ, Yamcha volunteered to fight the Saibamen before Krillin because he knew that Krillin could not be wished back again if he was killed. And Yamcha even challenged to fight all of the Saibamen together. Neither of those things sounds cowardly to me. He happily received training from King Kai and continued to train. After which he finally returned to Earth after being wished back. In the Garlic Jr. Saga, Yamcha couldn’t do any of the fighting since he had been taken over by the Black Water Mist, but since that was all made up by Toei, no one should look down upon him for that. During the Trunks Saga while the Z Fighters were preparing to attack Freeza, Toei excessively made Yamcha look like a huge coward. The fact is they were all a little scared, but Toei stretched it out so much on Yamcha. He was there willing to fight, and you can’t ask for more then that. Yamcha had just gotten wished back too. Then he showed up three years later just like he said he was, ready to fight the Androids. He was even the first one to go up against an Android. People will criticize him for leaving, yet he was helping Goku get back home so he could take his medicine, so this was an honorable thing to do as far as I’m concerned. And later on he was back with the others searching for Cell, not out hiding. He even went to the Cell Games and ended up fighting there too. Never once did he run away. Seven years later although he had given up fighting, he still stuck with his friends. The scenes of him scared to go in the water because it will mess up his clothes are all filler. Sure enough, he goes to Kami’s lookout to help support the others, and when Buu shows up, he doesn’t run away then either. People complain that when Krillin charged Buu and Yamcha didn’t that Yamcha was being a coward. Actually Krillin never charged Buu either, they were all disposed of the same way, and we never actually got to see what exactly happened. All the scenes of him in the afterlife on the Kai’s training ground are also filler. And once again, we don’t see Yamcha hardly any in DBGT not because he’s a coward, but because Toei just doesn’t care enough to include anyone else, the same applies to the movies.
