From the guitar sound of the early 70's and the foundations of the stooges and Black Sabbath grunge came out of the 90's in a hybrid for of punk. With the aesthetic of the 70's guitars grunge was far from metal. With the lyrical quality and the form of musical attack it was obvious that this form of music sprung the punk scene, in particular the independent ideals of the early 80's (American Hardcore). with the first wave of grunge (Green River, Mudhoney and soundgarden) had a heavier sound that the second wave (Nirvana) Nirvana (unlike the first wave of grunge) had a stop-start dynamics and became more mainstream and hence forth grunge lost most of its independence and punk rock became more popular in the early 90's.
