I am interested in lots of things, and usually say that my one hobby is collecting hobbies. Two of these hobbies (in addition to SCA, Brewing, and Crafts) are Renaissance Festivals and attending SCI/FI and Anime conventions.
Though I now live in Ohio, my "home" renaissance festival is the Maryland Renaissance Festival, which is held yearly from the end of August through most of October. I have enjoyed attending as many of the 19 days of the season for the past 11 years (having a season's pass makes it easier), and know many of the performers and vendors by name, if not by sight.
Now that I am in Ohio, there is also the Ohio Renaissance Festival. Though I have only attended twice my first year here, I am going to try to attend more often next year. The only lack that I can think of out here is trees (and decent beers). >grin<
SCI/FI and Anime conventions are also fun to attend. I have been to PhilCon and MarCon. PhilCon for me was iffy, as I didn't know more than one or two people, and it was hard to try to break into the cliques that didn't seem to want to meet anyone new. MarCon is an interesting time. The convention is not about a single genre, but includes sci-fi, anime, and other genres. I was able to attend a couple of the lecture/classes/etc, and delighted at the acceptance of a newcomer's ideas and comments. I am going to be going back to MarCon next year, and we shall see what happens!
I have now been to two different Anime (Japanese Animation) conventions, those being Katsucon and Ohayocon. Ok, so I have been on staff for Katsu 7-9, 11, and 12 but it was an accident! You see, I had no idea what anime was, and a friend asked if I would like to learn by helping him at the con. I said "yes" and that was all it took. If you know about my "helium hand", is it hard to discover that I'm now my friend's assistant in charge of the dealer's room? As for Ohayocon, I wasn’t sure how it would be to attend an Anime con after being on staff for one, but I had a wonderful time and am planning to return again next year.
There are so many different genres of anime that I have been slowly finding more that I like. Friends and I have decided that the Outlaw Star series is a good introduction for those looking for a starting point. Other good ones would be Trigun and Cowboy BeBop.
I have many different series that I have collected (or am in the
process of collecting), and there is no possible way I could review each
one. If you have any questions, please ask! (see email me at top of page)
