My grandfather used to chauffer the nuns from the convent in Clarksville from St. Thomas to St. Marcellus, and to Pittsburgh, and wherever else they had to go.
This is their nut roll recipe from the 1960's.
I don't know how old the recipe actually is.
                       The Nuns' ~ Nut Rolls

Makes 6 long nut rolls
5 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
1/2 lb butter (2 sticks)
1/2 pint sour cream
3 eggs
1 small cube yeast or 1/4 large cube

Crumble the yeast and sprinkle with 1 tsp sugar
Can add just a bit of warm water
Let stand till pasty

Cream together the butter, eggs, and salt

Fold in the following in the order given
     stirring after each addition
Sugar, then sour cream, then yeast mixture

Add the flour a little bit at a time
Mix till smooth and dough leaves hand (not sticky)

Divide into 6 equal size balls

Let rise 1 hour till double in size

Roll out and spread with nut filling (use your own nut filling recipe)

Roll up, place on pan, let rise again till double

Bake at 350 deg. for 1 hour or until brown.
