My grandfather used to chauffer the nuns from the convent in Clarksville from St. Thomas to St. Marcellus, and to Pittsburgh, and wherever else they had to go. This is their nut roll recipe from the 1960's. I don't know how old the recipe actually is. |

The Nuns' ~ Nut Rolls Makes 6 long nut rolls 5 1/2 cups flour 1/2 cup sugar 1 tsp salt 1/2 lb butter (2 sticks) 1/2 pint sour cream 3 eggs 1 small cube yeast or 1/4 large cube
Crumble the yeast and sprinkle with 1 tsp sugar Can add just a bit of warm water Let stand till pasty Cream together the butter, eggs, and salt
Fold in the following in the order given stirring after each addition Sugar, then sour cream, then yeast mixture
Add the flour a little bit at a time Mix till smooth and dough leaves hand (not sticky)
Divide into 6 equal size balls
Let rise 1 hour till double in size
Roll out and spread with nut filling (use your own nut filling recipe)
Roll up, place on pan, let rise again till double
Bake at 350 deg. for 1 hour or until brown.
