Professional Organizations
NCTM
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) is a professional organization designed to educate the nation's mathematics teachers.  NCTM produces publications, conferences, research, and funding for a variety of mathematics endeavors.  The infamous Standards 2000 were also developed through NCTM. 
MCTM
The Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) is a professional organization of mathematics teachers in Michigan.  This organization is designed to "encourage active interest in mathematics and its teaching" (MCTM, 2000).  Through conferences, publications, and development of matheamtics programs, MCTM provides the setting for rich comunication about mathematics education and its implementaion to take place.
ScMaTA
The Science and Math Teacher Association (ScMaTA) is an organization designed to bring together pre-service and inservice teachers.  Housed at Western Michigan University, the organization was started in October of 1999.  ScMaTA has monthly meetings on topics including integrating math and science, interview skills,undergraduate research projects, and action research by local teachers.  Members include elementary, secondary, and graduate students, as well as teachers and community members interested in the development of math and science education.
