PROBLEM #4:  (Exponential Decay)                                                               (Submitted by Allison)
Nancy Ward was acclaimed Ghighau or "Most Honored Woman" of the Cherokee Nation about 1755.  While in her teens and the widowed mother of 2 children, she was given this high position because of her courageous acts in battle and her cry for peace among the Whites.  She was buried in neighboring Polk County in 1822.  An Indian artifact belonging to Nancy Ward, beloved chieftainess of the Cherokee, was found in 1999.  The equation for carbon dating the age of the necklace is:
                      R = 1/(10^12
)e^(-t/8223), where R, the ratio of carbon after t years, = 1/(10^12.01)
Find the age of the necklace in the year 1999. ______________________________________
According to the carbon dating, is it possible that the necklace belonged to Nancy Ward? __________

SOLUTIONS TO HIWASSEE RIVER AREA PROBLEMS:
1.  h = 2.61 + 19(tan 22) = approx. 10.29 meters
2.  h = 2.6 + 5(tan22) = approx. 5.15 meters
3.  g = (70)(18)/28 = 45 inches
4.  a = -8223(-0.01)ln10 = approx. 189 years;    Yes, Nancy Ward lived 1738 - 1822.
