Michael

(For Michael Ward, 1974-1994)

He was nothing different to look at
Just another baby two months old,
But his eyes so full of timeless mystery
Reached out to me and took hold.

Who's in there, Michael?
Does that helpless body hide a friend of mine?
What'cha saying, Michael?
Are you praying for me, Michael?
If I fall too deep into your eyes
I'll win my race with time.
Those eyes reached out and drew me in
I could not look away,
Solemn, calm, and gentle inner
Infinity today.
And who's in there, Michael?
Does that helpless body hide a friend of mine?
What'cha saying, Michael?
Are you praying for me, Michael?
If I fall too deep into your eyes
I'll win my race with time.
So fresh from where we came from
And so close to long ago,
You could tell all the secrets of the universe
And you know how much I want to know.
And who's in there, Michael?
Does that helpless body hide a friend of mine?
What'cha saying, Michael?
Are you praying for me, Michael?
If I fall too deep into your eyes
I'll win my race with time.
