• Laran gift and laran training: The Alton Gift, mixed with a touch of Ridenow. One odd aspect of her laran is that sometimes she can tell when someone is lying or telling the truth. Strong laran; middling telepath. Still training at Dalereuth Tower; wears a matrix. Kestria doesn't have the full Alton Gift-she can't force rapport on everyone-but she is able to influence the weaker-minded. The bit of Ridenow donas she possesses allows her only to get a vague impression of what someone's feeling, not the full impact of emotion a real Ridenow empathy would receive.
• Politics: Liberal; anti-expansionist; while no longer the male-basher she used to be, Kestria has trouble trusting many men in authority. She takes Terrans as she finds them.
• Personality: Somewhat shy, but warms up quickly to people; tries to be polite when insulted, but tends to respond venomously. Likes to tease and tell stories and jokes. Charming, and utterly unaware of it-thinks it's just "being friendly".
• Strengths: Quick mind, avid curiosity, daring nature, good sense of humor, observant, protective and loyal;
• Weaknesses: Hates to lose an argument, outspoken, tries to take on way too much; quick temper; cynical outlook.

• Appearance: 5'7; cropped, curly black hair; deep-set, wide blue-green eyes with strong brows. Has a heart-shaped face with a stubborn chin, short tip-tilted nose, and full mouth. Slim of build. Kestria's smile is warm and impish, and her scowls make the Hellers look balmy.
• Romantic relationships: A five-year relationship with Gavriela n'ha Sybelle (NPC), a Renunciate at Thendara; Gavriela has a two-year-old child named Crystal.
• Platonic Friends: Her oath-mother and sisters at the Dalereuth Guildhouse; Piedro Aillard-Syrtis; Daimary MacAran; others at the Dalereuth Tower.

• Other Information: Her mother Callina was unmarried when Kestria was born-"festival-gotten," as Callina's family believed. Callina was married off to Shann MacEwan, a tailor in Dalereuth and an aging widower who gladly accepted Kestria in order to have her mother. The marriage was a truly happy one, marred only by the question of Kestria's sire. At fifteen, Kestria tested positive for laran and was sent to Dalereuth Tower; Callina died of illness before she could reveal who her daughter's father was. Kestria went back home a year later to help care for her stepfather, who was also ailing and neglected by her stepbrother Carlin. When Shann died, Carlin married Kestria off to one of his drinking mates, a man named Stefan MacDonal. Stefan was in his forties, a heavy drinker, a bully and a lout; Kestria miscarried a six-month child due to a punch in the stomach from her husband and never conceived again.
  
  Unable to put up with Stefan, who kept his violence directed at the parts of her body that were kept covered, Kestria dosed his wine with a purgative and ran for the Guildhouse once he was confined to bed. She had to be put to bed herself for the bruises covering her from shoulders to knees. Kestria took Oath; she was nineteen at this time. She also went back to the Tower to complete her training.
