Daruma is known in
China as Datmo and in India as Bodhidharma. He is said to have lived from 460 to 534
A.D. and was the twenty-eighth patriarch of the pure meditation sect (Dhyana). Daruma
gave up his worldly possessions and in 527 A.D. he traveled from India to China. There at
the Shaolin Temple (Small Forest Temple), he
taught the monks three kata sets; namely 18 Healthy Exercises, Bone Marrow
Washing, and Muscle-Tendon Change. His physical, mental and spiritual teachings at
the Shaolin Temple greatly influenced Oriental martial arts. He was highly skilled in
meditation, yoga and the martial arts.
