If the girls can’t find you handsome they should at least find you handy, that’s the motto of my roommate Alex George Krutsch. Alex was born May 8th, 1982 in Wheaton, Illinois, he lived their for five years till he moved to Romeo, Michigan. Alex’s parents divorced shortly after they moved and he left to live with his mother in Fraser, Michigan.
Alex’s was living with his mother and his sister, money was tight for them so they lived in a turn of the century farmhouse. Alex’s mother was going back to college to get her degree, so Alex was the "man of the house," at age ten it was not be uncommon for him to change light fixtures and trim shrubs. Finally, after living in the farmhouse for four years, Alex’s mom bought a nice size house in Roseville. After living with his mom for a year, he moved in with his father. When Alex moved in with his father, he told him "play times over, its time to get a job." Alex got a job at Donut Depot, glazing and frosting donuts. Due, to a hostile work environment, Alex became a disgruntled employee. To extract his revenge on Donut Depot he overflowed the jelly donuts, a naïve customer would end up with a lap full of jelly. Finally, after a year of working in hellish conditions he quit in a fury of rage.
In the summer of 1998, after turning sixteen Alex bought his prized possession a 1985 Plymouth Reliant for $250. To offset the cost of the car and gasoline, he got a job at Thrifty Florist. Alex worked there after school and on weekends as a sales associate. To make up for the poor wages, he would sell flowers out the back door and keep the profits. Alex estimates that over a year of making black market deals he grossed over $2,000. He worked at their flower shop for two years till he left Fraser to come out Kalamazoo. Alex eventually put that money toward his tuition at Western Michigan University where his currently a Sophomore. Alex is now majoring in education and hopes to graduate in the fall of 2004, majoring in secondary education.
He’s majoring in secondary education not only because he loves teaching but because he likes the idea of the freedom that a teacher has. No matter where he wants to go in the world he will be able to teach. Alex has achieved a lot of things in his life but what makes it even more impressive is the hardships and the adversity he’s had to defeat.
