Chess Engines

Dolt This chess engine is rated at approximately 1600. Don't be fooled by the name, it is just a little harder than it sounds. Intended for the beginner. However, on Blitz mode (on setting of only 1 minute for the entire game) it can be very challenging, depending on your skill level. Unavailable download.

Dimwit Dimwit is rated at approximately 1800 on a 1 GHZ processor, which is considered expert level. This engine on slower machines is easier to beat. This is also harder to beat than what you might expect from the name. If you are intermediate-expert you should have no problem beating this engine. Unavailable download.

Ozwald Ozwald is even harder than dimwit, and on a fast machine is intended for an expert. Created by Jori Ostrovskij. Available download.

Crafty Crafty is a great deal harder than Ozwald, and it is intended for a master of chess. It has a rating of 2400-2600, and I have seen it rated at 3100 with a fast computer on ICC. Ratings are different on different servers so this does not mean that it has a higher rating than Kasparov. Although most players can't beat it, it is fun just to watch it play other engines or attempt in futility to beat it. Crafty is among the best chess engines (highest rated) in the world.
