Carlos Colon is to Peurto Rican wrestling what Hulk Hogan is to American
wrestling. He has met and defeated some of the all time greats and had
bloody, violent feuds with Bruiser BRody and Abdullah the Butcher. Colon
formed the World Wrestling Council in 1973 and promoted his own cards.
In 1983, Colon defeated "Nature Boy" Ric Flair in what was called a Title
Unification Match between NWA and WWC World Title belts, however, the NWA
chose not to recognize the title and Colon renamed the WWC title the WWC
Universal Heavyweight Title. Colon would defend against and defeat NWA
championship superstars Dory Funk Jr, Terry Funk and Rugged Ronnie Garvin
as well as defeat Stan Hansen, Ernie Ladd, Tully Blanchard and a host of
others in defending the gold and putting on classic matches.
Colon focused mainly on
wrestling in Peurto Rico and did not make an impact in the United States
as a result, though many fans will remember that Carlos Colon participated
in the 1993 Royal Rumble Match which was won by Yokozuna. Colon wrestles
very sparingly now, but his legacy continues with his sons Eddie Colon
and Carlito Cool, who has gone on to become a WWE US and Intercontinental
Champion. Colon belongs here in the UWOW Hall of Fame as a true legend,
not only in the ring, but as a wrestling promoter. His legend will continue
to grow as more fans become acquainted with the legacy of the great Carlos
Colon. |
