The great Funk Family in wrestling began with Dory Funk JR's father, Dory
Funk Sr and spawned the great NWA World Champions Terry Funk and Dory Funk
Jr as well. Dory was a star football player at West Texas State University.
When he followed his father into wrestling, he instantly became a contender
and defeated Gene Kiniski for the NWA World Heavyweight Title in February
of 1969 and held it for four years before losing it to Handsome Harley
Race in 1973.
Dory moved to the WWF in 1986 and changed his name to Hoss Funk to team with Terry Funk in feuds with Junk Yard Dog, Tito Santana and Hulk Hogan and took on Jimmy Hart as their manager. Dory would go into semi-retirement
following his WWF run and started the Funkin Dojo wrestling school. Funk
continues to compete part-time on the independent scene and has wrestled
some classics in Japan. Dory also returned to the WWF for the 1995 Royal
Rumble that was won by Shawn Michaels. Funk is a legend in Japan and the
United States and his legacy as a trainer is rivaling his great legacy
as one of the great wrestling stars of the 1970s and 1980s.
