The legendary Dynamite Kid began his career in his native England and excelled
in Japan, wrestling classics with the original Tiger Mask and others.
While working overseas, Dynamite Kid was scouted by Bruce Hart of the legendary
Hart Wrestling Family of Calgary and brought back to North America to engage
in classic matches with Bret "Hitman" Hart and others. Dynamite was in
Calgary for a few months when he brought his cousin, Davey Boy Smith, to
the promotion and instantly began feuding with him. The two would eventually
become a tag team, touring New Japan Pro Wrestling as well. In 1985
In 1985, Vince McMahon purchased Stampede and the British Bulldogs moved
to the big time, taking on Captain Lou Albano as their manager and eventually
defeating Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake for the WWF World Tag Team
Titles at Wrestlemania 2. The Bulldogs lost those titles to Bret Hart and
Jim Neidhart of the Hart Foundation before engaging in a lengthy feud with
them and the evil referee Dangerous Danny Davis. The Dynamite Kid, unfortunately,
suffered from back injuries and this would keep the Bulldogs off television
but when they returned, they came with a pet Bulldog named Matilda and
feuded with Bobby Heenan and the Islanders, culminating in a Wrestlemania
4 handicap match. The Bulldogs would then feud with the Fabulous Rougeau
Brothers, as managed by Jimmy Hart, and backstage politics resulting from
Dynamite Kid and Jacques Rougeau's open and ongoing physical violence off
camera lead to the Bulldog's dismissal from the WWF just after the 1988
Survivor Series.
Davey Boy and Dynamite
returned to Stu Hart's rejuvenated Stampede Wrestling to win the Tag Team
Titles before splitting up and having a very bitter feud when Davey Boy's
storyline cousin, Johnny Smith, interfered. In 1989, Davey Boy Smith made
a deal to return to the World Wrestling Federation without Dynamite and
a very personal hatred began to develop between the two men. Dynamite retired
around the time Stampede shut down and is now retired after years of injuries
related to his high risk wrestling style.
Dynamite Kid indeed belongs
here in the UWOW Hall of Fame, after years of classic wrestling that has
inspired the likes of Chris Benoit, Bret Hart, Chris Jericho, and a host
of others. His high flying style broke the mould and truly started a new
style of wrestling in North America. Congratulations, Dynamite, you are
a Hall of Famer. |
